 Outdoor Life Grand Slam:

Andrew McKean the hunting editor of Outdoor Life (OL), and OL Grand Slam winner, Jim Ewing, spent seven days in the Ruby River Valley hunting elk and whitetails.  Outdoor Life reader and the winner of the OL Grand Slam Adventure hunted whitetail with Upper Canyon Outfitters and elk with Layne in the back country camp, Advantage Backcountry Outfitters.   Jim and Andrew had an exciting hunt, and experienced some extreme Montana weather conditions.   They experienced Montana's snowy high country for rifle elk hunting.   Strong wind conditions during the whitetail hunt, one evening while we slept a ferocious wind tears the Double Bull out of the ground.   They never gave up during all of this and it proved to be a successful hunt.  Jim was fun, easy to please and a true sportsman.   Andrew McKean is truly a person who cares about the future of hunting and conservation, it was an honor to have both these gentleman at the ranch.   Check out the day to day hunt and photos.  I hope you enjoy the story as much as we did hosting it.  Make sure and read about all seven days of Jims hunt.  Great photo's!

GETTING READY FOR 2011 AT UPPER CANYON OUTFITTERS, ALDER, MONTANA:

 Greetings!

SunsetUpper Canyon Outfitters had one of its most successful seasons in years!  The summer season began with plenty of rain in June, making for a green and rewarding fishing season through September.  Lots of exciting days fishing on the Ruby with many a tight line fighting large Rainbow and Brown Trout. Last summer marked 100 years since my grandfather homesteaded in the Ruby Valley and of course that called for a party. The horseback rides and views from the mountain tops were inspiring to say the least with the country side full of blossoming flowers and flourishing greenery for the abundant wildlife in the Ruby Valley.

We had a tremendous hunting season, things started a bit slow, but it soon turned out to be one of our best seasons ever. Because of the wet summer many elk were able to avoid detection by staying in the deep timber where some of the greenest clover grew, making for a difficult archery season.  However, even with the tough conditions our hunters were able to harvest those elusive elk.  Rifle season was as successful.  The UCO staff put in extra scouting hours to locate the hot hunting locations, which I knew paid off nicely within the first week of rifle season when all of our guided hunters had prospects at elk and things never slowed down.  2010 was an incredible year.

Don't forget to update your information with UCO!!! You can now select your interests such as fishing, hunting, and horseback riding. We will be sending out special interest emails throughout the year.

This issue will include information on how Montana will be issuing hunting licenses in 2011, fishing and summer plans for 2011, dates and location of sport shows we are attending, story from "Outdoor Life" about UCO and important dates to mark on your calendar.

Hunting License for 2011

huntingIf ever you wanted to come to Montana this is the year! Montana's nonresident licensing system has changed; both our guided and unguided hunters will be in the general draw.  We anticipate a high success rate with the 2011 draw and feel that the 17,000 elk/deer combo pool of licenses will not be sold out. Once you book with Upper Canyon we take the worry out of applying for your license, we will assist you in completing your application. Applications for these licenses must be post marked on or before March 15th.  We strongly encourage you to apply on-line to insure that the application is correct.  Fish, Wildlife and Parks Special Licensing Department phone is 406-444-2950.

For on line Licensing (which we strongly suggest doing) go to         On Line License

To insure the dates you want to hunt in Montana, book your dates early.  If you don't get a license your deposit is returned 100%.  By booking early we will help you with hunting license information and keep you up to date on any changes.  We are working hard in legislation to help protect your opportunities to hunt in Montana.  Hunting is great don't let these changes discourage you.

Homestead tour
Cabin on our Homestead Tours

We are going to keep our summer prices the same as the 2010 season at Upper Canyon Outfitters.  We want you to be able to join us for one of our many adventures. The ranch is nestled between three beautiful mountain ranges, with the Ruby River meandering through the property. We are dedicated to providing unparalleled, successful trips for each of our guests. The Tate family has been enjoying the Ruby Valley since our grandfather homesteaded here in 1910.

We would like to share with you not only our ranch that sits at 6000 feet, lush forest, soaring peaks to 10,000 feet and breathtaking scenery, but also our commitment to quality by providing a truly unforgettable Montana experience. You will witness  mile after mile of scenery, horseback riding adventures, exceptional fly fishing opportunities, native wildlife, hiking, history and homestead tours, and only 40 minutes from historic Virginia City and two hours from Yellowstone Park. PLUS: this summer we are adding a Bamboo Concave and a horse clinic titled  "From the inside to the outside of the Horse" both of these new activities will promise lots of fun.  We hope to share with you our family western hospitality and a true Montana vacation.
