Would an SBA Loan benefit you?

If you're planning on starting a business or expanding an existing one, the U.S. Small Business Administration participates in a number of loan programs designed to help business owners.

SBA Loans for new and expanding businesses:
Basic 7(a) Loan Program: Loans for starting, acquiring and expanding a small business. This type of loan is the most basic and the most used within SBA's business loan programs.

Certified Development Company (CDC) 504 Loan Program: Provides growing businesses with long-term, fixed-rate financing for major fixed assets, such as land and buildings.

Microloan Program: Offers very small loans to start-up, newly established or growing small business concerns. SBA makes funds available to nonprofit community based leaders which, in turn, make loans to eligible borrowers in amounts up to a maximum of $50,000.

A complete list of what documents you will need to collect for your application is available on the SBA website's
Loan Application Checklist.

Are your files protected?

Everyone gets that gut-wrenching, heart-stopping moment of fear when their computer does something unexpected.

And it is a universal certainty that this will happen when you have open, unsaved work and/or you haven't backed up your files in a while.

Computer backups, like virus scans, should be done on a regular basis. For the average personal computer user, once a month is probably enough. However, for someone who uses their computer frequently, or for business purposes, a daily or weekly backup is a better idea.

There are plenty of options for how to backup your files, from CDs to external hard drives to online backup services.

CDs and DVDs are good for people with few files to back up, who are able to spend time babysitting as the disks burn.

External hard drives provide the convenience of being able to set up an automatic backup schedule, and the size of drives is going nowhere but up. Drives as large as 2 TB (2048 gigabytes) are readily available.

Cloud services are also popping up left and right as providers vie for a spot in the newly emerging market. Computer World magazine has a good review of a few of the services available -- but more than listed are available, so be sure to check into other services.

Whichever option you go with, a good backup of your computer files could be the difference between time spent with your family and time spent retyping months (or even years) worth of customer data, personal files and more.

Economic Outlook Summary

Economic growth for the second quarter was revised up slightly to a 1.7% annual rate from the originally reported 1.5% growth. The upward revision can be traced partly to better consumer spending than first estimated. Since the end of the quarter, the economy has continued to show positives - as well as negatives. The Institute for

Supply Management (ISM) factory index fell slightly again in August. This marked the third consecutive month the index has been below 50, which indicates contraction. While the manufacturing sector appears to be contracting slightly, the services side of the economy has remained in growth territory, even though the level of growth has slowed over the last six to twelve months.
