Great Balls of Fire! is now open! 

Have you ever wondered:

What are comets, asteroids and meteors?

Why did the dinosaurs go extinct?

What would happen if a meteorite hit Hickory? 

Does Hollywood get it right in the movies?

Get the answers to these questions and learn more about comets, asteroids and meteors in this interactive multimedia attraction. See actual meteorites on loan from Catawba Valley Gem and Mineral Club (CVGMC)and asteroid models from Catawba Valley Astronomy Club CVAC).  Learn about CSC teen's involvement in the development of this exhibit.

Catawba Science Center is happy to present another year of engaging, educational programs to inspire young scientists. 
   
Rocket Boy Preschoolers will get their hands dirty and their minds piqued by exploring simple science concepts through play, crafts and demonstrations.

The Preschool Science Program is open to all children ages 3-5 and accompanying adults are admitted for free. Classes will be held at CSC;s HPC classroom on Tuesdays, from 10:30 until 11:15 am..   

Class fees:
Individual classes: $9 for members and $17 for nonmembers
Entire year option: $65 members and $130 for nonmembers.


In order to reserve your child's space, registration and payment are required in advance.  Class space is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis

Chemistry 101

Tuesday, October 23

CSC's Inventor's Workshop

 

Hasn't it been too long since you blew something up or made slime?

 

Enjoy a review of all that is fun about chemistry in CSC's Inventor's Workshop. During this hands-on chemistry class, participants will have the chance to review the signs of a chemical reaction, experience both exothermic and endothermic reactions and walk on oobleck without having to balance one equation!

 

Main Arts and Science Center building doors open at 6:30, program begins at 7 pm.

 

Admission:

$10 for Members

$15 for Non-Members

 

Hors d'oeuvres available; beer and wine with donation.

NATIONAL CHEMISTRY WEEK
October 20-27, 2012

 

Science! Participate in table top activities, led by CSC's Science Ambassadors & staff, Sunday Oct. 21 and Wednesday, October 24 through Friday October 26.

 Join CVCC's Dr. Alvin Moore on Sunday, October 21st and CSC's mad scientist Bobs Singletary on Saturday, October 27th for special (sometimes fiery) demonstrations of chemistry basics.

FREE FRIDAYS

 

Since the introduction of a general admission fee in 1996, Catawba Science Center has designated certain Free Fridays as days that all* children, families, and individuals have the opportunity to experience hands-on learning at CSC on certain days without financial burden.

2012-13 Free Fridays are the 1st and 3rd Fridays of each month.

 

CSC Members continue to get free general admission* every day, so remember to keep your membership current to avoid the crowds on Free Fridays.

What animals are associated with fall weather and Halloween?

 

Join Bruce Beerbower, CSC Lead Naturalist to discover little known facts about real animals. 

 

Learn about snakes, spiders, bats, and more.  You will even get to meet some live animals as well as preserved ones!

Included with General Admission to CSC.

 

 
TEEN VOLUNTEERS

Any interest in joining Science Volunteers at Catawba Science Center?

Teenagers interested in doing something different this school year will want to apply for CSC's teen program, SVCSC.  The program will allow kids to perform science demonstrations, educate the public on our latest traveling exhibit, learn about science and technology careers, and serve their community.  Volunteer experience also looks great when it is time to fill out college and job applications.

 

Volunteers will be asked to make a year-long commitment to the Science Center for at least four hours a month.  For an application or more information please contact Erin Graves.

Many CSC memberships will expire at the end of October, so be on the look out for CSC Membership Renewal materials in your mail and email.

 

CSC Members continue to receive many great benefits, like free admission to CSC exhibits and discounted rates on planetarium shows, science camps, Science After Dark, and birthday parties. To remain eligible for these program discounts, your CSC membership must be valid throughout the time you or your family member will participate.
