American Diabetes Month®

Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the US as new cases continue to be diagnosed at a rate of 4000 per day. This sobering statistic places millions of people at greatly increased risk of coronary heart disease, stroke and sudden death from a heart attack and contributes to the obesity epidemic.

Diabetes is Caused by Poor Diet and Inactive Lifestyle

The New England Journal of Medicine
concludes that `the majority of cases of Type II diabetes could be prevented by the adoption of a healthier lifestyle`. Diet is the single most important factor which leads to metabolic dysfunction, loss of blood sugar and insulin control and excessive levels of triglycerides which become stored as abdominal fat.

Many other factors contribute including lack of physical activity, smoking and environmental pollutants and toxins. Diabetes is a lifestyle disease which can be prevented by following a naturall diet, getting regular exercise and limiting exposure to household and environmental toxins.

Management of your type 2 diabetes includes:

  • Using your medicines exactly as your doctor prescribes
  • Making smart food choices
  • Being physically active

All 3 of these steps contribute to blood sugar management and therefore the management of your type 2 diabetes. Managing your type 2 diabetes is a goal whose importance is hard to exaggerate.

Look For These Signs and Symptoms of Diabetes:

Many of the signs of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes are similar. In both, there is too much glucose in the blood and not enough in the cells of your body. High glucose levels in Type I are due to a lack of insulin because the insulin producing cells have been destroyed. Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body's cells become resistant to insulin that is being produced. Either way, your cells aren't getting the glucose that they need, and your body lets you know by giving you these signs and symptoms.

  • Frequent trips to the bathroom
  • Unquenchable Thirst
  • Losing Weight Without Trying
  • Weakness and Fatigue
  • Tingling or Numbness in Your Hands, Legs or Feet

Thoughts for Living

Allow Your Own Inner Light to Guide You

There comes a time when you must stand alone.

You must feel confident enough within yourself to follow your own dreams.

You must be willing to make sacrifices.

You must be capable of changing and rearranging your priorities so that your final goal can be achieved.

Sometimes, familiarity and comfort need to be challenged.

There are times when you must take a few extra chances and create your own realities.

Be strong enough to at least try to make your life better.

Be confident enough that you won't settle for a compromise just to get by.

Appreciate yourself by allowing yourself the opportunities to grow, develop, and find your true sense of purpose in this life.

Don't stand in someone else's shadow when it's your sunlight that should lead the way.

6 Ways to Beat Stress

What is relaxation? The mystics say it is to completely "lose yourself" or to "be in flow" in your activity, so that all internal "chatter" is stilled. Modern-day researchers have linked relaxation to a marked slowing of brain waves accompanied by clarity that is called "the awakened mind."

But how do we achieve this admirable state, and how can we maintain it over time? Let's explore some of the ways that you can quiet your mind, melt away stress and approach relaxation of the body, mind and spirit.

1.  Spend some time in the silence every day

In our high-tech world, we are surrounded by and      immersed in information make time for yourself, and take a break from the info-stream every day.

2. Reconnect with stillness
Every day, devote a little time to take yourself out of the "busyness" game. First, eliminate all forms of intrusion. Then close your eyes, breathe deeply and let your thoughts float downstream like a log carried by the river.

3. Pursue your passion
Activities that absorb you completely will slow your brain waves and put you into that "zone" in which internal chatter is stilled.
Physical movement is important-it opens the chest, lifts your mood, curbs food cravings and lowers blood pressure. You'll also sleep better at night.

4.  Treat yourself to a massage
Getting a massage on a regular basis can help to lower your heart rate and blood pressure and promote muscle relaxation and emotional release

5.  Let the tears flow
Crying can be very therapeutic. According to Sinatra, "Crying is one of the most cleansing experiences you can go through." Here's why: Deep sobs open the chest and diaphragm, releasing bound-up energy. This helps to free your heart of muscular tension. A good cry also enhances oxygen delivery to the cells and stimulates release of specific neurochemicals in the brain that promote relaxation.

6.   Laugh
Laughter is truly the best medicine.  Rent a funny movie, tune into the Comedy Channel and enjoy a good old belly laugh.

Ingredients

  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1/2 of a 17.3-ounce package Pepperidge Farm® Puff Pastry Sheets (1 sheet), thawed
  • 1/2 cup apricot preserves or seedless raspberry jam
  • 1/3 cup dried cranberry
  • 1/4 cup toasted sliced almond
  • 1 (13- to 16-ounce) Brie cheese round

Heat the oven to 400 degrees F. Beat the egg and water in a small bowl with a fork.

Unfold the pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface. Roll the pastry sheet into a 14-inch square. Spread the preserves on the pastry to within 2 inches of the edge. Sprinkle with the cranberries and almonds. Place the cheese in the center of the pastry. Fold the pastry up over the cheese to cover. Trim the excess pastry and press to seal. Brush the seam with the egg mixture. Place seam-side down onto a baking sheet. Decorate with the pastry scraps, if desired. Brush with the egg mixture.

Bake for 20 minutes or until the pastry is golden brown. Let stand for 45 minutes. Serve with the crackers.
