| Creative Economy Forum Here Friday | |
On Friday, February 25, from 9-11 am, the Massachusetts Cultural Council and MassINC are hosting a "Gateway Cities Creative Economy Roundtable" right here in Haverhill, at the former Antiques Market, 90 Washington Street. Businesses, culture-oriented nonprofits, artists, and citizens interested in the city's revitalization should all attend this important gathering. Please RSVP to Neluka Levy or call 617-727-3668 x231. Hear about the impact of the cultural sector and the results other cities like ours have achieved--and network with others who will be making a difference this year, especially through the Adams Implementation Grant initiative. Tomorrow's Haverhill Gazette will carry a guest column by Alice Mann exploring the meaning of the cultural economy for our city. |

| HCC Event and Contest "Make Some Noise" |
| | Mark Hayden |
The Haverhill Cultural Council's recent benefit--A Taste of Creative Haverhill on Feb 12--was an extraordinary success! Well over 200 people turned out to support their newest project, Make Some Noise, a free, 16-week performing arts series in downtown public spaces every Thursday starting in July. The Tap's owner and general manager (John Fahamian and Sharon Cohen) donated the space, which will also be used for the public Creative Economy Forum on February 25. Others major sponsors included Harbor Sweets Handmade Chocolates and MS Walker's Wines and Spirits. Local saxophonist Mike Cesati and blues guitarist Paul Prue serenaded the crowd. A special guest appearance by local favorite Elle Gallo made this a true community event.
The HCC is also sponsoring a "Make Some Noise Facebook Contest" where participants can "make some noise" for the arts by uploading a photo or 1-second video online. The entries will be judged in three categories: Most Creative Noise, Best Group Noise, and Funniest Noise. The contest runs until July 1 and winners will be "crowned" on July 7, after the premiere performance of Make Some Noise. To enter, log in to a Facebook account and search for Make Some Noise.
February 12 was an encouraging launch for a new and vibrant arts and culture sector this year. Make Some Noise is part of a strategic endeavor to utilize the arts as a catalyst for economic growth. Places like Lowell, Newburyport, New Bedford, and Pittsfield have all seen substantial revitalization because the arts are supported, featured, and promoted. |
