Two Sparkling Events to Benefit Essex   Gateway Mural

Community members of every taste have two great choices for an evening out while supporting Haverhill's newest landmark, the Essex Gateway Mural.

An Oscar Night Out mural-benefit event will be hosted by Archie's Place, 46 Washington Street in downtown Haverhill. On Sunday, February 27, from 7-11 p.m., guests will walk the Red Carpet into Archie's and watch the Academy Awards with neighbors and friends. Ticket-holders will enjoy free appetizers, compliments of Archie's, accompanied by a cash bar. Tickets are $20 in advance at NMTW Community Credit Union (20 Cushing Avenue, Haverhill) or by mail (see below). Tickets at the door are $25. All proceeds will be applied to the Essex Gateway Mural.

A five-course Wine Dinner will be hosted by Keon's 105 Bistro on Sunday, April 3 at 6 p.m., also to benefit the Essex Gateway Mural. As guests gather at the restaurant, located at 105 Washington Street in Haverhill, they will sip sparkling wine, then sit down to five elegantly designed food courses, paired with distinctive wines and commentary by Alan Boisvert, owner of the award-winning Keon's restaurant. The ticket is $80, including gratuity, so the cost is competitive for a fine dining experience. Seating is limited at this intimate venue, so early reservations (information below) are recommended.

Tickets by mail for these events: To purchase an advance ticket for Oscar Night, or a ticket for the wine dinner, please send your name, address and email address along with a check payable to the           GHCC CAEF (this stands for Greater Haverhill Chamber of Commerce Community Arts and Education Foundation, which is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization). Mark the memo line "Essex Gateway Mural", and mail your check to:    Essex Gateway Mural, c/o Tim Jordan, 167 Kingsbury Avenue, Haverhill, MA 01835.

History Comes Alive through Story-Telling

J.G. Whittier's Birthplace and Calvary Baptist Church are teaming up to sponsor a free musical production of Anne Broyles' Priscilla and the Hollyhocks on Saturday, February 19th at 1:00 p.m. in the Calvary Baptist Church sanctuary, 13 Ashland Street, in downtown Haverhill. Marie Rawlings, noted storyteller and musician, will tell this memorable story in words and songs, accompanied by Calvary's Youth Choir and young members.

Priscilla, a young slave girl, possesses a talent passed down from her mother--making dolls from hollyhock flowers. As Priscilla finds her freedom, you will hear her true tale of sorrow and of longing, and learn about the family who adopted her along with fifteen other children. This engaging production celebrates Black History Month. Whittier was one of America's first abolitionists.

When Marie Rawlings came to the John Greenleaf Whittier Birthplace last summer, participants of all ages were drawn into another American story (Little House on the Prairie) by singing songs Ms. Rawlings had taught them on the spot. Priscilla and the Hollyhocks will involve the whole audience in a similar way.

The program is supported in part by a grant from the Haverhill Cultural Council, a local agency affiliated with the Massachusetts Cultural Council.

In the event of snow, the program will be held on Monday, February 21st at 1:00 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, Ashland Street, Haverhill. Parking is available in the lot next to the building.
