THE BACK FENCE NEWSLETTER
The Newsletter Featuring Livable Community Items That Readers Value and Highlights of Happenings Along the West Corridor on the RTD West Rail Line Serving Golden, Lakewood & Denver.

Bill2012

The "W" Line Opens in:
198 Days.

After almost three years of twice-a-week publications, The Back Fence will be shifting to only once a week later this fall. This will allow us to focus more on our cycling advocacy in conjunction with the opening of the West Rail Line and the "final mile" from each station to dwellings & destinations in the area.

Stay tuned.

Hi Everyone! This is Bill Spriggs and I have found several news articles, links and blogs that I wanted to share along THE BACK FENCE & beyond in this Wednesday Edition, October 10, 2012.

High-Speed Rail is Closer to Reality in Colorado
By Allen Best, Oct 07 2012
Colorado began talking about
high-speed rail in the late 1990s. Citizen activists along Interstate 70 insisted upon a better solution to weekend congestion than hacking additional lanes of pavement from the towns, mountains and creeks of
Clear Creek County. They vaguely called
for a monorail. Planners more clinically call it an automated guideway system.

By Brent Toderian: Oct 05 2012

The Power of the Movable Chair
By Nate Berg, Oct 08 2012
In his classic 1980 study of the use of public spaces in New York City, William H. Whyte and his team of researchers used cameras to watch people and understand how they used the public places in the city. One of the takeaways from the film footage was that people like to sit in public places, and, far more fascinatingly, that if given the option they will almost always move chairs before they sit in them.

Should the Market Alone Determine Parking Supply?
By Eric Jaffe, Oct 09 2012
n 2004, London reformed its parking policy to encourage alternative transportation modes. The city replaced its minimum parking standard, which required developers to create a certain number of parking spaces and has been found to increase driving, with a cap on spaces. The hope was that this new parking maximum would "promote sustainable transport choices" and "tackle congestion."
