Hi Everyone! This is Bill Spriggs and I have found several news articles, links and blogs that I wanted to share along THE BACK FENCE & beyond in this Wednesday Edition, Aug 29, 2012. |

Dear THE BACK FENCE:
Thanks for another great newsletter. The article about the apartment buildings without car parking (Sun, Aug 26, 2012) reminded me that my family lived for many years in a "post-war" upper west side apartment house in Manhattan. These so-numerous buildings were typically about 12 stories tall with over 100 apartments in each, with doormen on duty 24/7. None of them had any parking (except for bikes), and can you imagine how different the upper west side of Manhattan would be today if they all had parking? Imagine the congestion from encouraging rather than discouraging apartment dwellers to have cars!

By Monte Whaley, Aug 29, 2012 Regional Transportation District general manager Phil Washington defended the FasTracks commuter rail project Tuesday night over searing criticism that the agency has steered rail away from the north suburbs in favor of other metro corridors.
Gold Line Progress: Jersey Cutoff Construction By Ryan Mulligan, Aug 28, 2012 It's not super sexy and it's fairly remote, but here's the first sign of construction for both the Gold Line and Northwest Electrified Segment (NWES)! The Jersey Cutoff bridge is a little known, but critical piece of both corridors.

A project that calls for a 120-mile, high-speed transit system to be built on Interstate 70 between Jefferson County and the Eagle County Airport is certain to attract top thinkers - and the biggest dreamers - both foreign and domestic.

U.S. Taxpayers Are Gouged on Mass Transit Costs
By Stephen Smith, Aug 26, 2012
If the first segment of Manhattan's Second Avenue subway opens on schedule in 2016, New Yorkers will be reminded that it was once "the line that time forgot" -- a project more than 75 years in the making, with no end in sight. It should be remembered for another failing as well: It will be one of the most expensive subways in the world.READ MORE...

Is a Vehicle Miles Traveled Tax a Good Idea?
By Eric Jaffe, Aug 24, 2012
Late last month the Associated Press reported that San Francisco transportation officials will study the idea of implementing a tax on vehicle-miles traveled as a way of decreasing congestion and increasing roads funds. The plan would charge drivers anywhere from fractions of a penny per mile up to a dime depending on the time of day. Based on current driving patterns, the mileage tax could deliver the Bay a daily revenue in the area of $15 million

Stuck in traffic, Cancer Surgeon Commandeers Little Girl's Bike to Get to the Hospital
By Jess Zimmerman, Aug 27, 2012 Breast cancer surgeon Catherine Baucom is six feet tall, but she rolled up to work last Wednesday on a little girl's pink bicycle. Baucom had been stuck in nightmarish traffic after a serious accident that shut down the interstate, but she knew her patient was waiting at the surgery center. So she hopped off the highway, drove to a friend's house, and commandeered his 8-year-old daughter's bike.READ MORE...TheAtlanticCities In New York, Toward a Harmony of Police and Cyclists By Eric Jaffe, Aug 28, 2012 The relationship between bike riders and police officers in New York is historically rocky. Riders have a reputation for flouting traffic rules - sometimes that's deserved, sometimes merely perceived - and cops have stuggled to understand which bike laws can and should be enforced. As ridership increases, especially after the delayd-but-inevitable launch of bike share, the road will only get rockier. |

World's Biggest Bus is 98 Feet Long and Can Fit 256 Passengers By Jess Zimmerman, Aug 27, 2012 This monster of public transportation is actually three buses chained together into a sort of Vehicular Centipede. It's nearly 100 feet long, fits 256 passengers, and - if you believe the institute that developed it - is no harder to drive than a regular 40-footer. So basically, it's a subway train minus the complicated underground infrastructure. Even better, Buszilla is a hybrid that can go up to five miles on battery power alone. READ MORE...
