Denver's Streetcar Routes Are Retraced by the Rail~Volutionaries
By Laura Bond, Jun 26, 2012  To the stroller-pushing momies and patio-side drinkers who lined West 32nd Avenue on Sunday afternoon, it probably looked like just another Cruiser ride, as thirty folks on bikes trekked up the Highland hills in Sunday's [June 23rd] 100-degree heat.

By Dennis Huspeni, Jul 02, 2012
"We like that location on Broadway...It's uniquely located because it's walking distance from two (RTD light rail) stations at Louisiana and Broadway, so young professionals can access either the Denver Tech Center or the Central Business District. It's right in between prominent employment and entertainment centers."

Transportation Bill Heading to President Obama's Desk

By Ray LaHood, Sec of Trans, Jul 02, 2012
More than 1000 days ago, the law that guided federal investments in transportation expired. Congress extended that law several times while legislators discussed and debated what would replace it. I'm happy to say that last Friday, 373 Members of the House of Representatives and 74 Senators voted in favor of a new law that will fund federal surface transportation policy through September 2014.

As the dust has settled a bit on the new, two year transportation bill that was passed last week, it's time to start understanding what it means for bicycling going forward. Rents Now Rising Even Faster Than Home Prices

Questioning the Obsession with Cars

By Austin Miller, Jul 01, 2012  There's a dirty little secret about driving: Nobody likes it. Most people are not able to admit it, for they are unaware that congestion, the constant and excessive costs of car ownership and road rage are avoidable. No survey can generate responses such as, "I only think I like driving because I see few alternatives, and all of those threaten my identity."

How Smart Should Our Maps Be?

By Rebecca J. Rosen, Jul 02, 2012
Maps can be beautiful, interesting, and, of course, useful, but there are a lot of questions we address to maps - and these days, Google Maps specifically - that maybe a map isn't the best tool for answering.

US politicians Slash Bike Funding
By Carlton Reed, Jul 01. 2012  The US House and Senate has approved a three-year transportation bill which maintains current funding for building major highways but the cash for "transportation enhancements" - such as cycling and walking programmes - has been cut by up to 70 percent. The Safe Routes to School programme has been eliminated completely. A majority of US politicians wanted to see bike funding reduced from $790m to zero but had to compromise on savage cuts instead.

Tour de FasTracks - West Rail Ride Bike Event

Saturday, Sept 15, 2012

Calling all cyclists in Golden, Lakewood, west Denver, and the Denver Region.

The RTD FasTracks West Rail Line which will serve our West Corridor will host a bike event on Saturday, September 08, 2012 to show off its magnificent bike path that parallels most of the future "W" line.

The Back Fence, in the coming months, always a huge supporter of alternatives to the single occupier automobile, will advocate for the "final mile" and call for more and safer cycle access from the light rail stations. We also consider the bicycle as not only a recreational vehicle, but a tool of economic empowerment that helps our citizens stay healthy and keeps more expendable cash in their pockets in which to enhance our local businesses; and I won't bore you with lectures on sustainability, oil dependence and air quality.

Although the Tour de FasTracks event is billed as a "leisurely ride" that will start at the future Oak Street Station parking area and end at the Decatur Federal Station, there also will be a stage for the intermediate and advanced cyclists that will start at the Jefferson County Government Center-Golden Station. Details will be forthcoming, but you can Click here to view the current RTD bike path.
