Proposed Toll Road Bill Won't be Introduced After all

By Mayor Marjorie Sloan, Apr 23, 2012

Today, we're pleased to report that we've been told that the bill will not be introduced this legislative session. This very positive news is a testament to the focus and energy of citizens who have made their voices heard on these issues. We were also aided by the leaders of some neighboring cities who were concerned that the proposal overreached and undermined regional cooperation.

One Thing Missing from the Urban Farm Movement: Farmers
By Nate Berg, Apr 24, 2012
They're growing like weeds, but often growing only weeds. Urban gardens and farms are appearing in backyards, schools and empty lots in cities all over the country. But people with the actual know-how and willingness to tend them - in other words, farmers - are far less abundant.

Green Infrastructure Could Save Cities Billions
By Nate Berg, Apr 24, 2012
Compared to canvas grocery bags or CFL light bulbs or even solar panels, larger "green infrastructure" projects such as roof gardens or permeable streets can be hugely expensive. It turns out, however, that they're actually not that expensive when compared to the costs of building more traditional infrastructure, and can even save money. According to a new study, governments are wasting billions of dollars a year by not going green.

The Wildly Variable Definition of 'McMansion'
By Nate Berg, Apr 20, 2012

It took hold - arguably by descriptive necessity - because significantly larger homes were popping up in subdivisions and gated communities around the country. The average home size grew from 1,500 square feet in 1970 to more than 2,000 in 1990, eventually peaking at 2,521 in 2007.
