Lakewood-Wadsowth Parking Structure Groundbreaking Celebration, April 11, 2012

The RTD light rail West Rail Line that will flow through the center of the West Corridor celebrated another milestone yesterday. It held the groundbreaking celebration for the long-awaited Lakewood-Wadsworth Parking Structure in the southeast corner of 14th Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard in Lakewood, Colorado. The affair, hosted by RTD Board Member, Matt Cohen, District M, started promptly at 10am.

Even though the weather was cooler and a bit more overcast than the area had been experiencing for the past several weeks, it could not dampen the spirits of the some 150 plus folks in attendance. This parking structure that will have a broad, tree-lined plaza on the west side, that will, as Lakewood Mayor Bob Murphy stated, "be the start of a significant place-making location" for the City of Lakewood. The iconic, light rail station, parking structure and pedestrian plaza will transform the once, sleepy outlying community west of Denver into a bustling center of transit activity as the parking structure lies almost exactly ½ the distance from Denver to Golden Colorado on the future West Rail Line and the major north-south directional arterial road of Wadsworth Boulevard.

The flowing, cloud-like designed station canopies that will greet motorist as they drive under the station moving south and north on Wadsworth Blvd will be an amazing sight to see in daylight when completed, but will be even more impressive at night when the structure will be illuminated from below.

Speakers at the event included: Matt Choen, RTD Director, District M as as the emcee, Bob Murphy, Mayor of Lakewood; Scott Conrad, Swinerton Builders, Colorado Division Manager and Phil Washington, RTD General Manager.

Notables also in attendance were, Lakewood City Council members, Ward 2, Cindy Baroway and Scott Koop; Ward 3, Sue King; RTD Board Members, Lorraine Anderson, District L and Bruce Daly, District N; Faye Griffin, Pro Tem, District 1, Jefferson County Commissioner; Jay Hutchinson, City of Lakewood, Director of Public Works & Roger Wadnal, Senior Strategic Planner, City of Lakewood.

Also in attendance were community activists, Keith Dameron & Kathy Hasjford from the Two-Creeks Neighborhood and the unsinkable, Nattie Moore from the Lakewood Gulch neighborhood.
