Residents to RTD: Quit Promising and Give us Guarantees By Scott Rochat, Mar 15, 2012 RTD board chairman Lee Kemp pitched the newest FasTracks option to Longmont residents Thursday night: rail to Longmont between 2028 and 2034. Until then, the tracks would reach Church Ranch near Westminster and bus rapid transit would cover the rest.

House Won't Take Up Senate Transpo Bill as March 31 Deadline Looms By Tanya Snyder, Mar 16, 2012 So much for bipartisanship. House Majority Leader Eric Cantor is just waiting to pounce on Speaker Boehner for taking up Democratic legislation like the Senate transportation bill. Even though his efforts to whip his party into passing a five-year transportation bill that attacks transit, biking, and walking have been fruitless, House Speaker John Boehner isn't about to follow through on his threat to take up the Senate's two-year bill. That bill passed with 22 GOP ayes (and 22 nays) in the Senate earlier this week.

For House GOP, Safer Streets Are the New "Bridge to Nowhere" By Ben Goldman, Mar 16, 2012 Funding to make biking and walking safer has taken something of a beating in both the House and Senate transportation bills. The fate of the most significant federal bike-ped programs - Safe Routes to School,Transportation Enhancements, and Recreational Trails - is still very much in doubt. Under the Senate bill, passed Wednesday, local agencies would at least have greater access to the funds that remain for these programs. At last glance, the House bill completely obliterated dedicated bike-ped funding.

Feeding the Beast: The Backdoor Ways Transit Subsidizes Roads By Angie Schmitt, Mar 16, 2012 We've done our share of commentary on this blog about how transit is underfunded in the first place. So it's all the more upsetting to see highway projects pick the pocket of transit agencies. But that's exactly what's happening, in different forms, in different places throughout the country, writes Alon Levy at Pedestrian Observations. TheAtlanticCiteis.com

The Future of the City: Density, Sustainability, and Citizen Happiness After an hour and a half of driving, I was pretty thoroughly disgusted with the whole idea of suburbs. I became more and more unreasonable as I became more and more lost. What's the difference between "96th Street" and "96th Street Terrace?" Why were there so many parking lots? TheAtlanticCities.com
Is the Biker Rights Movement Gaining Momentum? By Eric Jaffe, Mar 14, 2012 In the past few weeks, the long march toward equal road rights for urban bike riders took two big steps forward. In late February, Berkeley instituted a law protecting riders from harassment by granting them the right to civil action, and last week San Francisco officials gave preliminary approval to legislation that requires commercial buildings to let riders take their bikes inside if there's no bike parking outside.
TheNewYorkTimes.com A Meter So Expensive, It Creates Parking Spots By Michael Cooper & J McGinty, Mar 15, 2012 The maddening quest for street parking is not just a tribulation for drivers, but a trial for cities. As much as a third of the traffic in some areas has been attributed to drivers circling as they hunt for spaces. The wearying tradition takes a toll in lost time, polluted air and, when drivers despair, double-parked cars that clog traffic even more.
SwitchBoard.nrdc.org Green, Supportive Housing for Veterans Should Become a National Model By Ken Benfield, Mar 15, 2012 If anyone deserves our thanks, appreciation, and support, it has to be veterans of the armed forces, many of whom serve at great risk and with honor only to return to civilian life devoid of much in the way of income, housing, or social services. A shocking portion are homeless: veterans make up around 9 percent of our population but 23 percent of our homeless population.

Rethinking the Automobile With Mark Gorton
By Clarence Eckerson, Jr. Mar 15, 2012
For more than 100 years New York City government policy has prioritized the needs of the automobile over the needs of any other mode of transport. Working under the faulty assumption that more car traffic would improve business, planners and engineers have systematically made our streets more dangerous and less livable. As a result, even the idea that a street could truly be a "place" - a shared space for human interaction and play - has been almost completely destroyed.
