Did You Know That Transit...

Mobilizes Voters?

With a 79% success rate, 2011 was another great year for transit at the ballot box. Voters once again demonstrated their support for investment when the benefits are made clear. Twenty-eight measures were on the ballot in 5 states throughout the year and 22 were approved by voters. Election Day alone resulted in more than $30 million in new funding for transit.

Day One of Votes: Senate OKs Two Amendments, Rejects Keystone Pipeline

By Ben Goldman, Mar 09, 2012
After two consecutive failed attempts, floor votes are finally proceeding on the Senate's two-year, $109 billion transportation bill. The votes come on the heels of an agreement between party leaders Harry Reid and Mitch McConnell, which will allow certain non-transportation-related amendments to be voted on. As part of the deal, those amendments will require 60 votes for passage instead of the customary simple majority.

View From Beyond the Beltway: Pass a Bipartisan Transportation Bill
By Three VIP's, Mar 09, 2012
We hail from three different levels of governance in three states, across three geographic regions, and from both parties, but we strongly agree on this: We desperately need an updated, bipartisan federal transportation bill that meets the 21st-century needs of communities like ours.

Explaining Transit's Secret Language

By Eric Jaffe, Mar 08, 2012
It's difficult to categorize Jarrett Walker's excellent new book, Human Transit. It's not quite for a popular audience, though it's written with engaging ease. It's not for academics, though it's as thorough as most published research and far more approachable. It's not strictly for a policy audience, though it's fresh grist for any transit wonk's mill.

Does Density Raise Prices?
By Michael Lewyn, Mar 07, 2012
It seems to me that density-phobia involves a similar litany of contradictory complaints. Traditionally, low-density zoning has been based on a desire to exclude so-called "undesirables" and thus keep property values high....But now that compact neighborhoods are becoming more desirable (and thus more expensive), the argument that density leads to poverty and plummeting property values can no longer be taken seriously.

Michael Mehaffy on the Need For Concentration and the "D" Word
By Michael Mehaffy, Mar 07, 2012
Ah, the "D" word, "density" - surely one of the thorniest in the world of planning! But Jacobs takes it on in this chapter with her usual fearless perspicacity.

Why Don't Real Estate Developers Just Ask Us What We Want?

By Emily Badger, Mar 08, 2012
It's not all that difficult to identify what kinds of new development a neighborhood needs. There's no pharmacy, no grocer, no gas station for miles? These are pretty obvious missing pieces in a community. It's much trickier, though, to identify what the people who live there want. A bagel shop? A vintage store? A vegan farm-to-table karaoke bar?

Women in Transit Still Swimming Upstream
By Angie Schmitt, Mar 09, 2012
State DOTs, generally speaking, are crowded with white, male engineers whose training is in building highways. Perhaps the inevitable result is that the issues facing a mother trying to load her stroller onto a crowded city bus tend to get short shrift.

TheAtlanticCities.com As Usage Rises, Libraries Struggle to Stay Open
By Nate Berg, Mar 07, 2012
It's an all-too-familiar cycle in municipal budgeting: the city's on the verge of going broke, officials propose cutting funding to libraries, community members protest. It's happened in countless cities, especially since the onset of the recession.

GreaterGreaterWashington.org Will Driverless Cars Really Slow for Pedestrians?
By David Alpert, Mar 08, 2012
Driverless cars will bring many changes to the way we see transportation. Some will be very good, some bad. But some commentators aren't convinced when I say a huge fight is brewing over how much the road system defers to pedestrians and cyclists or pushes them aside.

All Signs Point to a Big Year for Women on Bikes
By Johnathan Maus, Mar 08, 2012
Everywhere I turn I see signs of a growing recognition that there needs to be more women riding bikes in American cities and increasingly - both from the grassroots and on a national advocacy level - people are doing something about it. Given that women played a big role in cycling's popularity in the late 1890s and early 1900s, this is a resurgence that is long overdue.
