Did you Know Transit did That?...

Help Minimize Your Footprint

Leaving your car at home just two days a week by taking transit, carpooling, biking, walking or working from home will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an average of 1,600 pounds per year.

Hello everyone! This is Bill Spriggs and I have found several news articles, links, and blogs that I wanted to share along THE BACK FENCE & beyond in the Sunday, March 04, 2012 Edition.

The End of the Line for Northwest Rail?
By John Aguilar, Mar 03, 2012
To thousands of commuters living in the northwest corridor, including Boulder County, the prospect of a mass transit system without rail is nothing short of a gigantic broken promise.

Northwest Denver Area Homeowners Rail at RTD's Planned Train Cuts
By Monte Whaley, Feb 03, 2012
Anger over a proposal to nix a commuter train line to the north metro suburbs and beyond resulted Friday in a homeowners group presenting an online petition decrying the idea to a Regional Transportation District board member.

No-Train Option for FasTracks a Non-Starter in Louisville
By John Aguilar, Mar 01, 2012
High-ranking officials from the Regional Transportation District got an earful from residents and elected leaders in Louisville Wednesday on the future of commuter rail in the northwest corridor.

[THE BACK FENCE comment to links above] TBF has not taken an official position yet, but most likely will have a special edition on Tuesday, March 06, 2012, and back the many residents and some heated views of several City Council members in the NW area. This latest brouhaha is a public relations disaster of the highest order. TBF believes that if RTD decides NOT to build the NW rail line, RTD will get very little support from the very voters RTD needs the most in Nov 2012 for any possible tax hike plea].

U.S. 36 From Boulder to Denver to Get $311 Million in Improvements
By Monte Whaley, Mar 02, 2012
A complete retooling of U.S. 36 from Denver to Boulder begins this summer as the 60-year-old Boulder Turnpike is widened to accommodate those who travel by bus, car and even bicycle.

The sun rose this morning on a landscape considerably different from the one described by not one but two articles Streetsblog published yesterday.

Rising Gas Prices Mean Transit Riders Save Money While Car Drivers Empty Their Wallets
By Lesa Rair, Feb 23, 2012
As gas prices rise and predictions rumors swirl of prices reaching five dollars per gallon by this summer; commuters will be asking - what is my tipping point to switch to riding public transportation?

$5 Gas = Long, Hot, Crazy Summer
By Richard Heinberg, Mar 01, 2012
Here in northern California gasoline is now retailing for $4.20 a gallon. Prices haven't been this high since mid-2008. Forecasts for $5 per gallon gas in the US this summer are now commonplace. What's driving prices up?

Does Light Rail Really Alleviate Highway Congestion?
By Eric Jaffe, Feb 29, 2012
Transit advocates take for granted that public rail transportation relieves congestion on the roadways, but experts consider the question far from settled. Take two influential studies published in the last few years as an example: One found the latent demand for road space so strong that even expanding public transit can't hope to diminish it, while another concluded that cities with well-established rail systems do indeed have less traffic than those that do not.

72% of American Communities are Unafforadable
February, 2012
Most places are unaffordable when it comes to combined housing and transportation costs. 72% of American communities are unaffordable for typical regional households when transportation costs-the second largest expense in a family budget-are considered along with housing costs

Mapping Housing Misery
By Richard Florida, Mar 01, 2012
The economy may be inching toward a rebound, but it's largely failed to help the housing market. Home prices continue to drop (down 34 percent from their peak), with some saying we are now in the midst of a " triple dip."

St. Louis Takes the First Step Towards Highway-Cide

And the most exciting aspect is the potential elimination of a portion of urban highway that restricts pedestrian access between downtown St. Louis and this riverfront landmark.

Can Zoning Save a Downtown?
By Kaid Benfield, Feb 29, 2012
A city cited not long ago as the nation's most sprawling is now firmly on a path to become substantially greener. In particular, two weeks ago I described the Nashville region's impressive commitment to reform its transportation investments to support increased transit access, walkable neighborhoods, and a strengthened sense of place. And there's more.

Can a Highway Median Become an Alluring Public Space?
By Nate Berg, Mar 02, 2012
On one side of Miami's Biscayne Boulevard is a thriving downtown, filled with condos and office towers. On the other side is the Atlantic Ocean, and in a few choice locations, nice waterfront parks. The division between - Biscayne - has four lanes in each direction and a 100-foot median in between that carries overhead rail tracks and parking lots. All in all, it's a pretty wide barrier between the people and the parks.

[Editor's Note to below: Here's a series of 25 photos for all you historical junkies: Just remember that public outcry for better farm roads for their bicycles was the forerunner to the highway mess we are into today]

Why China's Urbanization Isn't Creating a Middle Class
By Nate Berg, Feb 29, 2012
...China's middle class is emerging to help propel the country's economic success even higher...The only problem is that this middle class doesn't actually exist. And unless decades-old rules change, it won't.

Green Transportation at Google
By Melanie Colavito, Feb 26, 2012
Google is striving to have a carbon neutral employee commuter transportation system, so they have some amazing programs in place.  These include a bus system, biking incentives, bikes on the Google campuses, and electric cars.  While this isn't entirely utility cycling oriented, it is nice to see companies with as much influence as Google taking on the task of green transportation.  Enjoy!
