TheDenverPost.com/Guest Commentary  Advanced Energy Sources
By Tom Steyer & Tom Clark, Feb 12, 2012
Last month, President Obama stood up at Buckley Air Force Base and vowed not to walk away from the promise of clean energy. That he chose Colorado for his speech is telling. With a strong military presence and a vibrant advanced energy entrepreneurial community - Colorado has ranked third in clean technology venture investment for the past three years - the state is poised as the laboratory of the nation's energy future.

[Editor's comment to below: And now a word from the past and from those hooked on Oil who shout at us and tell us that their automobile represents their personal freedom. My short response to Mr. Carroll: Countries are like addicted junkies on Heroin; when they run out of cheap energy they need their desperate fix -- and when they can't find it, they might go to war to find it. And as we all know, Freedom isn't Free].

Carroll: Cheap Gas Equals Jobs
By Vincent Carroll, Feb 12, 2012
It's been a while since Washington politicians and bureaucrats were extolling the alleged benefits of rising energy prices and championing policy that would drive them up quicker, all in the name of green jobs and climate virtue. Perhaps slow growth and stubborn unemployment, like the gallows, tend to concentrate the mind.

Six Lies the GOP Is Telling About the House Transportation Bill
By Ben Fried & Ben Goldman, Feb 09, 2012
The transportation-plus-drilling bill that John Boehner and company are trying to ram through the House is an attack on transit riders, pedestrians, cyclists, city dwellers, and every American who can't afford to drive everywhere. Under this bill, all the dedicated federal funding streams for transit, biking, and walking funding streams for transit
would disappear, leading to widespread service cuts and more injuries and deaths on American streets.

House Transportation Bill Too Extreme for Some Republicans
By Angie Schmitt, Feb 08, 2012
The House GOP's transportation bill is legislation only Big Oil can love. By eviscerating dedicated transit funds, killing programs that support safe streets, and linking transportation funding to oil drilling in the Arctic, the bill has managed to alienate everyone from environmental advocates to the ultra-conservative Club for Growth.

Tea Party Politics Imperils Transportation Bill
By Neal Peirce, Feb 11, 2012

How Transportation Planning Kills Streets
By Robert Steuteville, Feb 08, 2012
... the thing to be avoided at very high cost, is driving with lots of people all around you. That's called congestion. That makes sense on an Interstate highway, but in a mixed-use downtown - not so much. In fact, there's a technical word for the absence of people in a city or town: Dead.

U.S. Cities Are Losing 4 Million Trees a Year
By Eric Jaffe, Feb 09, 2012
Trees can do a lot for a city. From an environmental perspective, they improve air quality and also reduce temperatures, leading to lower energy consumption. From an economic one, they've been tied to increased property value, particularly in highly walkable neighborhoods. From a psychological view, urban trees even have an incredible restorative effect on our attention.

Where the Jobs Will be in 2020

One Month in Beijing = Smoking 5 Cigarettes
By Debra Bruno, Feb 09, 2012

No one would call Beijing a healthy city. Cars, bikes, motorcycles, rickshaws and carts speed up as pedestrians scamper across the street. Eating and drinking present a continual risk, with regular news reports about people getting sick from tainted milk, contaminated pork, adulterated noodles, rice, watermelons, bean sprouts, wine.

Cautionary U.S. Transportation Tales for India's Growing Cities
By Nte Berg, Feb 10, 2012
To have an American come and tell you how to make your cities more bike- and pedestrian-friendly might seem a little preposterous. But it actually makes sense; what Gorton can provide to a place like India is first-hand American knowledge of what not to do.

To those new to the area, a great way to get an entire "big picture" view of the entire project is to view the last RTD Fastracks briefing held for elected officials. Click here to view a slide show of the last RTD presentation...great photos!
