LOW INCOME ENERGY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (LIEAP)

APPLICATION PERIOD STARTS NOV. 2

Charlotte, NC - Applications for the North Carolina Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) will be accepted starting Nov. 2, 2010. The program assists Mecklenburg County residents who need help paying their winter heating bills.

Residents must apply in the counties in which they reside. Mecklenburg County residents may apply at the following locations:

Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Eligible households must: (1) meet an income requirement, (2) be responsible for the heating bills, (3) not have assets exceeding $2,200 and (4) include a U.S. citizen or an eligible non-citizen. Eligible households will receive a one-time payment in February 2011 to help pay their heating costs. Some households receiving food stamps as of Sept. 30, 2010 are automatically eligible and do not need to reapply.

Applicants need to bring the following information to apply:

October pay stubs for each employed household member
October childcare receipts
October unearned income (such as award letters)
October bank statements for checking and savings accounts
Verification of stocks, bonds, mutual funds and savings certificates
Verification of retirement funds (e.g. IRAs, 401(k), Keogh)
Name, date of birth and Social Security cards of each household member
Items to verify your identity (e.g., passport, Social Security card, driver's license)

What is LIEAP?

The North Carolina Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) assists eligible households* in paying their household heating bills with a one-time cash payment.

Am I Eligible?

Eligible households must

· meet an income test

· be responsible for its heating bills

· not have assets over $2,200

· include a U. S. citizen or an eligible non-citizen

· apply in the county where they live

When and Where Do I Apply?

Dates: November 1-12, 2010

Times: 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday - Friday

Elderly or disabled persons may send a representative to apply, or they may call 704-336-3000.

What Should I Bring When I Apply?

· Name, date of birth and Social Security cards of each household member
