MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. DAY
JANUARY 16
The Village is open on this Monday holiday for visitors to experience everyday life in an early New England town in winter, and to pay tribute to the 20th-century civil rights leader by presenting characterizations of 19th-century individuals with New England ties who played significant roles in the 19th-century movement to abolish slavery. Join storyteller and historian Tammy Denease as she presents "Honoring a Slave Heroine: The Mumbet Story." Denease portrays Elizabeth "Mumbet" Freeman, a young Massachuetts slave woman who won her freedom in court in 1781. Her landmark case led to the end of slavery in the entire state of Massachusetts. Learn more.
FIRE & ICE DAYS
JANUARY 28-29
It's a day to embrace the joys of an old-fashioned winter, complete with ice skating, sledding on vintage 1830s sleds, and horse-drawn sleigh rides. Join us at the Village's Mill Pond to watch ice harvested* with vintage ice-cutting tools and learn how early New Englanders cut blocks of ice and shipped them around the world before the invention of electrical refrigeration. Afterwards, warm up with hot cider, stories, songs and fireside tales at the Bullard Tavern. Watch magician Robert Olson demonstrate 18th century-magic tricks. (*Ice cutting demonstrations are weather and proper conditions permitting.)
ANTIQUE SLEIGH RALLY
FEBRUARY 4
Join us as Old Sturbridge Village hosts its second annual genuine New England Sleigh Rally. Dozens of antique horse-drawn sleighs - many of them 80-120 years old - will compete in a variety of categories including the popular "Sleigh Dog" and "Currier & Ives" divisions. Sleighs participating will include Bob Sleighs, Portland and Albany Cutters, Racing Sleighs, Freight Sleighs, and more.
BE MINE: CHOCOLATES & VALENTINES
FEBRUARY 11-12
Chocolate and valentines are two hallmarks of Valentine's Day celebrations. Learn more about both during this fun (and delicious) weekend. Learn about the history of chocolate - from bean to beverage. OSV historians will demonstrate processing chocolate by hand using cacao beans in the original manner of ancient Mexico, where chocolate originates. They will use a "metate" to grind freshly roasted chocolate "nibs" to make a hot, spiced chocolate drink. Learn the secret behind the 1824 recipe for "chocolate cake." Children can make their own valentines and visitors of all ages can "meet" the local woman responsible for the popularity of sending valentines in the United States.
