It was thrilling to walk the halls this past week, as we welcomed over 200 students to Torah Academy's 2011-2012 school year. The beautiful, inviting classrooms and special additions, all welcomed our new and returning students. What a treat to greet our mature Middle School boys to our new division! Class sizes have grown and rooms that were once too big, are now being used to capacity.

As we enjoy the special milestones of growth, I couldn't help but be reminded of a story told of the great mussar giant, Rabbi Shlomo Wolbe zt"l. R' Wolbe once visited a school with his son where they were shown around by the principal. The principal shared his excitement over his burgeoning student body of over 2000 students! As they were viewing the many classrooms, R' Wolbe asked him "Tell me - with so many students - are the administration and teachers able to discuss each student, analyzing his or her needs, successes and challenges?" Sheepishly, the principal admitted that with such a large population they were unable to find the time for such individual attention. Later, R' Wolbe turned to his son and forcefully said "It's important for you to know - this is not a place of Chinuch!"

As we celebrate the exciting milestones, and thank the Ribono Shel Olam for our outstanding growth, we must never lose sight of our essential goal: to focus our energies and efforts on helping each and every individual student grow and blossom into a greater Torah human being. As we increasingly become a 'larger school,' providing each of our children with the special Torah Academy warmth and individual care, remains our mission, challenge and privilege.

Wishing all a wonderful Shabbos.

Meet-the-Teacher Night

Our meet-the-teacher night was a time to meet our newest staff members and learn about new academic programs. A highlight of the evening was the official announcement of our new computer lab acquired through a $75,000 grant from the Gruss Foundation. Rabbi Baumann shared the larger vision of the school and internal programming.

Our students and their parents entered the school's doors with enthusiasm ready to begin a year filled with Torah learning and academic success. "A warm and wonderful welcome to all of our new families at Torah Academy. The students and faculty are so excited about the upcoming year of learning and growth," said Rabbi Baumann.

Dr. Wander spoke about her involvement with the school as a consultant to the general studies staff as well as involvement in the reading programs, curriculum development and assessment.

Orientation went beautifully as Rabbi Glazer welcomed his Talmidim to 6th Grade.  He engaged them in learning activities and shared with them their new responsibilities as sixth graders.

"This is a new level of education for them and it is a time for them to draw their own conclusions," said Rabbi Glazer. Learning Pirkei Avos with the students gave Rabbi Glazer an opportunity to access their knowledge and interest. "Each time we are together we will be learning," he added.

Rabbi Glazer will instill Torah values and stress mutual respect as a hallmark of Torah Academy and throughout the yeshiva. "We will foster meteoric growth in Torah, Middos Tovos, and academic excellence. In addition to these goals, we are committed to instill within each and every boy a strong feeling of positive self-worth, through successes both inside and outside the classroom," said Rabbi Glazer.

"It is so exciting to see all of my friends and get to know them again," said Chaim Gibber, fourth grader. All of the students were eager to organize their supplies and receive new text books and materials. A first project for the fourth and fifth grade boys was to create a quilt expressing the building blocks of friendship and classroom community. "The quilt is a way to reinforce the values of sharing and caring about one another," said Mrs. Plotkin.

Early Childhood Encounters

It was a very memorable first day for many of our youngest students. The Early Childhood children arrived on Thursday with backpacks, lunches and smiles as they said goodbye to their parents for a full day of learning, exploring and growing. "We are so appreciative to our PTO's involvement in the Early Childhood program. Their contribution of the new equipment both indoor and outdoor has been delightful in enhancing the creativity, play, and stimulation of our children," said Mrs Askotzky, Early Childhood Director.
