UNH Updates
December 6, 2011 Edition

Dear UNH Parents,

With classes ending Friday, Dec. 9th - Finals Exams Begin!

Reading Day is Monday Dec. 12

Exams start at 6 pm, Monday, Dec. 12 and go through Saturday,

Dec. 17th.

What you can do to help during Finals:

  • Reassure your student that the next few days or weeks will be stressful and challenging - but that they will get through it successfully if they stay focused for just a short while longer.
  • Encourage eating a balanced diet, getting enough sleep and exercise.
  • Suggest that your student participate in the Finals Week Events sponsored by Residential Life, the MUB and the Recreation Dept. - what student wouldn't want to participate in the Library's "Cookie Break" and "Primal Scream" on the eve of finals!
  • Offer support through phone calls, emails & text messages or send a care package!

Other significant upcoming UNH dates:

Dorms close at 3 pm on Dec. 17th.

UNH Offices are closed Dec. 24 through Jan. 1

January Term Begins Jan. 3rd - read all about it online at www.unh.edu/januaryterm/

Residence Halls Open for Second Semester at 1 pm on Sunday, January 22, 2012.

UNH Library News -
Changes coming to Dimond Library!

UNH Library

The big news at the UNH Dimond Library is a redesign of Dimond Library's main level.  As soon as students leave in December for the semester break, work crews will start the cost-conscious project to redesign the computer and stack area. This project is designed to enhance the library's user friendliness and will yield highly visible results with minimal disruption for students.  In fact, the Library will remain open during construction (except the week the entire University is closed) so January Term students, faculty and community members will have access to the library!

This low-budget redesign includes the following changes:

  • An alcove with half-walls is being created to centralize equipment including scanners, copiers and printers into one convenient work area for students and technicians
  • Lockers are being added on the main floor so students can store their laptops when they run off to class and plan to return to the library.  Benches will be available in this area for cell phone users.
  • Every other book stack will be removed and the height of the remaining stacks will be reduced to half to create a more open and inviting space.  This means much more natural light and a view to the outside from computer area seating!
  • New lighting installed over the tables (which will be retrofitted for computers and laptop accessibility).
  • Existing furniture will be moved from other areas of the library and retrofitted (ports/outlets installed) making the design very cost-efficient and the cluster area convenient for individual and group work.
  • While it's not part of the Level Three renovation, the Microforms collection has been weeded and relocated and the former Microforms room on Level Two will have 58 additional seats (all with electricity!) when students return in January!
Any comments or questions regarding these renovations can be directed to Tracey Lauder, Assistant Dean for Library Administration at tracey.lauder@unh.edu or 603-862-3041

Reminder to parents re: UNH Winter Parking Ban

If your student has a car on campus or is a commuter, please be reminded that like most communities, UNH engages a "Winter Parking Ban" (WPB) that restricts nighttime parking in our parking lots and streets. The UNH Winter Parking Ban went into effect on December 1 and remains in effect every night until April 1 regardless of weather conditions.

Most parking areas close directly at midnight and remain closed until 6:00 a.m.  Anyone (students, parents or friends) needing to park for any duration during these restricted hours must be sure to be in an area designated for WPB-exempt parking, or risk standard enforcement, which could include towing and storage fees. A description of the restrictions and parking options is posted online at http://www.unh.edu/transportation/parking/winterparkingban.htm.  Please make sure your student is checking the parking options daily to avoid tickets.

24-hour recorded information on the Winter Parking Ban is available by dialing 862-1001.  Other questions may be directed to Transportation Services at 862-1010.

Thank you for your cooperation!
