Dear UNH Parents,

Family Weekend Wrap - Up

UNH dorms helped to promote this year's Family Weekend - their incentive was that the dorm with the most parents filling out the Family Weekend Survey would receive a $250.00 donation to their Student Activity Fund.

And the dorm winner is:  Williamson!

There are nearly 500 first-year students who call Williamson Hall home. While Williamson is a big hall, each floor is relatively small. This allows for great communities to develop and strong friendships to be made. There is never a shortage of activities going on in Williamson Hall.  Hundreds of programs take place throughout the semester, each floor has at least one social event a week.

In addition to these fun events, there are educational programs on a wide variety of topics throughout the year including: setting SMART goals, alcohol use, study abroad, sustainability, food drives, healthy eating and a "What would you do?" program. These programs are a great way to connect with other students and learn about important issues going on around campus and to gain more knowledge on issues students care about.  While many of these programs are presented by the hall staff, many are done by our committed Williamson Hall Activities Council (WHAC) made up of about 15 first-year students.  Congratulations Williamson Students!

UNH Parents Association Grant Program Committee is waiting to read this year's student Grant Proposals

The Grant Committee, made up of current UNH parents serving on the UNH Parents Council, are waiting to receive their packet of Grant Proposals from UNH student groups, after the Nov. 9th submission deadline passed.  A number of student group representatives attended the October Grant Workshops to learn more about the grant criteria and review previous successful grant proposals.  Students from the UNH Fencing Club, Campus Activities Board, Outdoor Adventures, Lunabotics, Project Eden, Waysmeet Student Assoc., Women's Rowing and Tae Kwon Do attended the 2 workshops and were able to ask questions about the program.

Last year's awards from the Parents Association's Grant Committee included seed money for the Trash to Treasure Recycling Program, new equipment for the UNH Wildcat Marching Band Colorguard, matching funds for UNH Film Underground group, UNH Ice Cats Send Off Show support, a pitcher's mound for the UNH Baseball Club, and windscreens for the UNH Tennis Courts, requested by the UNH Club Tennis Team.  Some of these awards you've already most likely seen this year during move-in day, Family Weekend or Home Coming.

The UNH Parents Association started awarding enhancement grants to the UNH students groups and departments more than 15 years ago, these awards could not have continued without the support of UNH Parents!  Parents make a difference at UNH!

Did you miss this?

The New England Fall Astronomy Festival (NEFAF) was held at UNH for the first time on Oct. 14 th & 15th.  It was a free, student & family-friendly event filled with telescopes for sky-watching, talks by amateur astronomers and professional scientists; it even featured NASA astronaut and UNH Alum Lee Morin.  NEFAF was hosted by the UNH Physics Dept. and the Observatory in conjunction with the New Hampshire Astronomical Society and amateur astronomers from Maine to New York. This is just one of the many out of the classroom experiences that UNH students could take advantage of here on the UNH campus.

Thanksgiving Reminders:

UNH Residence Halls close at 6 pm on Wednesday, Nov. 23rd and open on Sunday, Nov. 27th at 1 pm.  Hope you and your entire family have a great Thanksgiving holiday!
