Warm Greetings! |
|
Summertime is coming to an end. This year, I've been busy with
many teaching and speaking engagements, which is rapidly becoming a
more significant component of my professional life. I am excited by
this development, as I appreciate the varied opportunities to share my
experience, passion and perspectives with a wider audience. Of course, I also continue to see clients individually and support them in their self-healing journeys, the place where I still learn the most about mindful healing.
I want to let you know about some of what I've been up to and give you my
current schedule for the Fall and upcoming events for 2010.
I am excited to announce that in
cooperation with the OAND, I will be teaching a Webinar on Mind-Body Medicine, December 3.
We have also begun discussions to explore developing a Mind-Body
Institute.
Highlights
from the past year include keynote speaker at the annual conference of
the Ontario Association of Naturopathic Physicians (OAND). (See comments from executive director.)The OAND also
sponsored me to teach a mindfulness and mind-body therapy training for
ND's and health care professionals, which was a great success. I also
taught a similar training at the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health, and at
the Sivananda Yoga Retreat on Paradise Island, Nassau, the Bahamas. The
training is on the schedule again for 2010 in Toronto and in the
Bahamas. And I also continue to offer mentoring services for physicians seeking
to integrate mind-body therapy into their practice.
A local highlight was speaking to a group of over 300 at the Y's Men of Westport/ Weston on How Biography Becomes Biology.
Locally,
I continue to teach mindfulness programs for the Insight Meditation
Community of Fairfield County and New York Insight Meditation Center. I
greatly enjoy teaching a weekly mind-body heath class for the Westport
Center for Senior Activities. I have collaborated with Dorrway to
Health to offer programs in Beyond Diets.
Please review the upcoming events listed and described below. If you are interested in scheduling a speaking or teaching engagement, becoming a client or mentoree, and/or want further information please check my website or contact me directly.
I am working on writing a book on mind-body integrative medicine, Where's the healing? Illness As a Vehicle for Awakening
My website, www.drpaulepstein.com, is updated regularly with
audio and video files of my speaking and teaching engagements for listening and viewing on the media page: http://www.drpaulepstein.com/media-cd.shtml.
Please
share/ forward my newsletter with all who may be interested. I hope to see you
at some of my events. CDs and DVDs are

| Noble Silence |
|
Here I am canoeing down the Green River in Colorado
during a two week mindfulness meditation retreat. What an amazing experience to practice meditation with a group of people living in noble silence in the wilderness. It was as fantastic as it looks and
then some. I recommend it to all.

Saturday, January 23, 2010 10am- 4pm New York Insight Meditation Center Day-Long Retreat The Eight Fold Path...Skillful Means in Life, Medicine and Healing. The noble eight fold path describes the way to end suffering. It is a practical guideline to awakening and freedom from greed, hatred and delusion. It leads to liberating insight and understanding the truth about all things. Life's challenges provide a wonderful opportunity to live, practice and apply all eight aspects of the path more fully as interdependent principles rather than a sequence of single steps...to deepen our understanding and insight of the eight fold path as skillful means in life, medicine and healing.

"... As Dr. Epstein's survey results were outstanding, we invited him to come back to Toronto to lead a 3-part professional training course on Mindfulness & Mind-Body Therapy in February, April and June 2009. This course involved two three-day weekends and a 90-minute webinar.
... Dr. Epstein presents passionately
and knowledgeably and provides participants with practical skills they
can use with patients. The combination of his theoretical and practical
teaching style is outstanding..."

Insight Meditation Community of Fairfield County (Guiding Teacher)
6 Week Class "When things fall apart, heart advice for difficult times" exploring the teachings of Pema Chodrun. In When Things Fall Apart this head of a Tibetan monastery in Canada outlines some relevant and deceptively profound terms of Tibetan Buddhism that are germane to modern issues. The key to all of these terms is accepting that in the final analysis, life is groundless. By letting go, we free ourselves to face fear and obstacles and offer ourselves unflinchingly to others. The graceful, conversational tone of Chodron's writing gives the impression of sitting on a pillow across from her, listening to her everyday examples of Buddhist wisdom. (Book Review)

| I just wanted to extend my thanks again to you for an inspiring and eye-opening day yesterday! Really, it was a great experience for me, and has caused me to think about my upcoming surgery in a whole new way. I also am taken with your "chicken soup" analogy in particular, it made it so clear that it's my own consciousness in fact that is the secret ingredient to my (true) healing. I am so grateful for this insight, thank you so much! I could go on and on, but suffice it to say, you have opened up new doors for me, that I plan to continue cultivating long after this surgery is behind me. Thank you thank you thank you! - Workshop Participant

Seeing with New Eyes, The Self-Healing Journey St. Paul's Episcopal Church Sunday, October 25, 2009, 10:20-11:10 am If healing is a journey, the spirit is the path we travel along as we heal. Our dis-eases tell a story, not just about our cells, but about ourselves and our histories. By a guided understanding of this story, we can come to understand how healing happens when we engage our inner healer and unburden ourselves from the wounds of our life story. In curing, we look for answers, while healing often involves hanging out with and living questions and trusting the emergence of insights that lead to true wholeness. The challenge in medicine is not the choice between curing and healing, we need both. True wholeness involves a re-membering of our essential being and our efforts to cure alone can sometimes miss the fuller learning opportunity that is available to us by engaging in the spiritual self healing journey.

Healing vs Curing
"In
curing, we are trying to get somewhere, we are looking for answers. In
curing, our efforts are specifically designed to make something happen.
In healing, we live questions instead of answers. We hang out in the
unknown. We trust the emergence of whatever will be. We trust the
insight will come. The challenge in medicine is not the choice between
one and the other. We need both." - Dr. Paul Epstein, featured in an
article in the May/June 2007 issue of Spirituality & Health
Magazine, "The Journey of Naturopath Paul Epstein: Healing vs. Curing."
