Greetings!
PictureOfDonOur local weatherman says it will be 86 degrees F in Greenville, SC today.  Are you ready for the impact of heat on your production facility?  It seems that the first onset of heat always brings electrical failures in control panels. Of course we need to check all the plant air conditioners and make sure the filters are clean.  If your production area is not air conditioned do you have fans and Gatorade?  The good news is that static is not a problem so much in the summer, but fiber finish can get sticky in the heat.  Have you cleaned the screens on your cards?  Are your procedures in place to handle unexpected power outages from thunder storms and are your people trained in the procedures?  Just a friendly reminder to get our ducks in a row for the change in seasons.

Have a great week.

EDANA video

Every once in a while I check the EDANA web site to see if there is anything new.  This time I found a video I had not seen before.  It basically explains what EDANA is and does.  It is pretty interesting.

Trutzschler Increasing Nonwoven Presence

Two news releases I found on the INDA web site indicate that Trutzschler is getting serious about nonwovens.

"We are the only supplier able to offer an integrated process chain up to the web bonding including all common methods. This is our strength which we consequently wish to demonstrate by our new appearance" says Leen Osterloh, CEO of Truetzschler Nonwovens.

Note that they have customer accessible R&D centers in Dulman and Egelsbach.

Check out these two links for more information.

INDA News

                 INDANews
I was looking for some information on the INDA web site and I came across the archives of INDA News.  What struck me as interesting was the section in each issue that highlights the new members to INDA and provides links to their web sites.  I know some sales people read my newsletter.  Are you using the INDA News as a resource to help you get sales leads?  Just a thought.

EDANA pushes for separate nonwovens classification

EDANA, INDA and ANFA are driving a new initiative to have nonwovens defined entirely separately from textiles.

Most nonwovens are currently classified under the Textiles and Textile Articles section of ISO 9093, for the purposes of international trade.

This, EDANA and its counterpart associations believe, is "grossly outdated, inadequate and inflexible".

Consequently, fundamental changes under the Harmonised Commodity Description and Coding System (HS) are to be requested.

"In the last thirty years or so, nonwovens have seen tremendous growth in terms of volume of production and international trade, and considerable innovations in their three most important characteristics from the industrial viewpoint - their constituent materials and web forming and bonding methods," says EDANA general manager Pierre Wiertz. "The existing definition does not meet the current needs of either nonwoven producers or users, nor do the explanatory notes match the state of the art in nonwoven technologies." ...Read rest of article

Hydrophobic/Hydrophilic

Hydro
Nonwoven fabrics can be engineered to have all kinds of properties.  Some are inherent in the fiber, and others are aded by applying coatings or additives.  The definition this week deals with how nonwoven fabric reacts to water.  Hydrophilic fabrics are water loving, and hydrophobic fabrics are water hating.  Like all relationships there are varying degrees of love and hate.  Print out the definition for your employees to learn about these two terms.  I suggest you look at the links. Some of them show amazing videos that illustrate these terms, especially hydrophobic.
