Greetings!
Don1
Let me relate to you an incident that occurred recently.  I was involved in troubleshooting a production line that had several problems. A couple of the operators had in excess of ten years each working on the line.  If you had asked anyone they would tell you that those operators knew the line and did a good job running it.  However, when we really dug into the problems with the equipment we found that the operators only knew the very basics and were lacking in a complete understanding of the process.  They did not know the reasoning or theory behind some of the setups for the machine.  Consequently, they were not able to get the machine back on track if it varied much from setup.

This drove home to me once again the crying need for our operators to be trained properly.  I can help.  Give me a call.

Have a great week.

Batt Formation in Nonwovens
Cormates Batt Former
This is a rather lengthy article that appeared in the Indian Textile Journal in December of 2009. Though the title of the article is Batt Formation, it goes into great detail about many aspects of making nonwoven fabric prior to bonding.  I think you will enjoy the article and I know everyone who reads this will learn something.

Handbook
One of the reasons I publish this newsletter is because there are so few resources available for learning and teaching about nonwovens.  However, there is a good book that all of you need in your library.  Handbook of Nonwovens, edited by S. J. Russell was published in December 2006.  Mr. Russell is with the University of Leeds in the UK.

Definition - Relative Humidity
Sweating
It's hot!  In Greenville we've had several days of 100 degrees F.  In South Carolina along with high temperatures we often have high humidity, especially after one of those short showers that last only ten minutes.  Equipment and fibers usually run better in the summer but the heat is hard on operators in plants that do not have air conditioning.
Many operators probably understand the effects of humidity, but do not know the definition of relative humidity.  Of course the lack of humidity in the wintertime can cause static and shut down a production line.  This week we look at the definition of relative humidity.
                          Here is the definition

Explanation of hygrometer from howstuffworks.com
Good article on hygrometers
White paper on monitoring humidity with data loggers
Good article on data logging software from National Instruments
