Greetings!
PictureOfDon
Every week I think I will run out of material but then something pops up.  Many of you are familiar with INDA, the Association of the Nonwovens Industry..  They do a great job and get better every year.  There is also a nonwovens group associated with TAPPI, the paper industry association.  The nonwovens group is called NET for Nonwovens Engineers and Technicians.  NET advertises themselves as the only professional society in the nonwovens industry.

TAPPI used to publish a quarterly technical magazine called the International Nonwovens Journal.  The last issue was in January 2006.  You can view the archives from 2001 through the last issue here.  This publication was replaced by an INDA publication called JEFF (Journal of Engineered Fibers and Fabrics) with Dr. Vaughn from Clemson as editor. TAPPI is a sponsor of JEFF.

I know many of us are busy with jobs, family, and other interests; but it would be good to take time to review the technical publications available and increase our knowledge of the industry.

No Term Definition This Week.  Here Is a Tutorial Instead.

This week I am changing things a bit and offering a tutorial instead of a term.  While looking at the home page of NET, I discovered a tutorial about nonwovens from NC State University.  This is very good and Dr. Behnam  Pourdeyhimi and the staff at NC State are to be commended for putting it on the web.

Anyone new to nonwovens should certainly view this as well as those who seek to broaden their understanding of nonwovens.  Even though you are involved in say melt blown nonwovens, you should still have some knowledge of needlepunch or spunlace.  It is good to be well rounded in your knowledge.  This is especially important for those of you who read this newsletter who are involved in sales.

Training That Works - Do People Count As Assets?

People
Organizations intuitively know that investing in learning has value. ASTD estimates that in 2007, U.S. organizations spent $134.39 billion on employee learning and development. No other business expenditure category receives so much funding with so little accountability. The point is that investors - whether they are owners, managers or stockholders - are recognizing the value of talent, skills, knowledge and engagement. While they wrestle with how to account for these on the balance sheet, savvy organizations are .......

One of my LinkedIn friends, Bill Wilder, wrote this article about employees as assets.  To read the entire article, click here.
