Greetings!
PictureOfDonThis e-mail goes out to quite a diverse audience.  Though the purpose is to address training, I like to be able to give you something each week that everyone can use.
I spend many hours every week on the internet doing research, surfing, and finding out what's new.  After a while it is difficult to keep the interesting and important items organized so I can refer to them later.
A tool I've found that is really helpful is Evernote.  Basically Evernote is a repository for almost anything digital.  When you store something, you can classify it and add keywords to make finding it later easy.  The basic version is free.  It works on the most popular browsers by inserting a button on the tool bar.  Click the button, and you can drop a web page into your Evernote page.  The data resides on the web in the Evernote servers so it is accessable from any computer connected to the internet.
Read this brief article by Walt Mosburg of the Wall Street Journal that explains it very well.  Another great aspect of Evernote is that you can capture images on you phone and send them to your Evernote page.  You can also e-mail data to your Evernote page.

Have a great week.

Term Definition - Barcode
BaleLabelThis week we look at the definition of barcode.  The use of barcodes is very common in our nonwoven plants.  Almost everyone uses them for labeling raw materials and finished goods.  They help us tremendously in speeding up those dreaded yearly inventories. Here are a couple of definitions from Wikipedia: barcode and barcode scanner  These links will give you a taste of the hardware available.                     This week's definition

I always recommend that you print the weekly definition on a color printer and place it on the tables in your canteen.  Here is a link to an inexpensive plastic stand that will protect the page from food spills and make it easy to read.

Job Description Forms

I stumbled across some forms for job descriptions on the Microsoft web site .  Several of the forms are generic blank forms that you can adapt to your use.  Others are for specific jobs.  If you need a job description form, check them out. Perhaps your forms are old and do not reflect the latest reguations.  It might be time to update your job descriptions.
Did you know we can do this?
Drilling needleboardMy needleboard company, Omega Engineered Technologies, specializes in prolonging the lives of needleboards.  Over time, the holes for the needles wear and will not hold needles.  There is a solution if the density of the board is not too high.  Pictured here are two boards that have about 1800 holes.  The board on the right is what it looked like when we received it.  The board on the left is after drilling.  We drilled out the worn holes so that plastic inserts could be put in the holes to hold the needles.  If you are not familiar with plastic inserts, you can get information from Foster and Groz-Beckert.
