Greetings!
PictureOfDonMy children gave me a Barnes and Noble Nook eReader for Christmas.  For those of you who do not know, eReaders are all the rage now.  Because of back orders, my Nook does not arrive until next week.  Once I receive it I plan to spend quite a bit of time learning the ins and outs of using an eReader.  I believe that the future of publishing is changing and eReaders will soon replace books.  With an eReader I can literally carry hundreds of books and periodicals in the palm of my hand.

I am telling you this because I think there will be a place for using eReaders on the production floor.  Imagine being able to have a device that will fit in your pocket and that can hold all the instruction manuals for every piece of machinery on the floor.  It could also hold all production procedures, company policies, and machine set-ups.  Devices that could do this have been available for several years, but they have been bulky and cost thousands of dollars.  These new devices will be less than $200 and small in size. At this price point, they can be considered a tool for every line operator.

Term Definition - Winder
WinderAlmost every nonwoven production line ends with a winder.  This week's definition describes several types of winders as well as various devices on winders.
                                 This week's definition

I always recommend that you print the weekly definition on a color printer and place it on the tables in your canteen.  Here is a link to an inexpensive plastic stand that will protect the page from food spills and make it easy to read.
Training That Works
CalibreLogoSince I am putting an emphasis on eReaders this week, I would like to mention a free software program that I came across.  This program is called Calibre.  It is for organizing you library of eBooks and working with them.  I could spend time describing what it does, but you really need to look at the introductory video.  This is a great program.
EDANA Translation Dictionary of Terms

For those of you doing work internationally, or if you have workers that speak other languages more fluently than English, EDANA has a listing of nonwoven terms in several common languages.  It is an Excel file and I have downloaded it to my site at this location.
