Greetings!
PictureOfDonLast week ended on a high note.  I was privileged to spend Friday morning at the Nonwovens Cooperative Research Center (NCRC) at North Carolina State University.  I met Angilo Corino, Sherwood Wallace, and an old friend John Fry.  Sherwood was kind enough to show me around the facilities.

The NCRC is actually a self supporting company funded by nonwoven companies that are members.  It's main emphasis is research.  They also rent out the machines for experiments.

The equipment is first class and very modern.  It is all standard production equipment and capable of running at production speeds.  The only limitation is width.  They have needlepunch, spunbond, meltblown, and spunlace equipment.  The lines are manned by full-time employees who are thoroughly trained.

Please look at their web site.

John D Hollingsworth on Wheels to Close
JDHOWSignThe only major American manufacturer of metallic card clothing will cease operations on December 31st.  We will miss many friends we have made over the years.  John D amassed a great fortune and land holdings. With his death nine years ago these were placed in a trust for the benefit of charities and educational institutions in the Greenville, SC area.

In 2003 Hollingsworth sold its international wire business to Truetzschler.  The remaining major players in the US wire businesss: Bekaert, Graf, and Truetzschler are all based in Europe.
Definition of the week - Lagging
Lagging
Producing quality fabric means paying attention to details.  An often under appreciated yet important part of most nonwoven lines is the roll covering called lagging.  Lagging comes in a variety of types and the proper lagging must be selected for the application.

I have observed quality defects due to lagging that was missing or damaged on a roll.  Do your production operators appreciate the importance of lagging?  Do they report damaged lagging so it can be promptly repaired?
