March 2012

Greetings!

Our Rising Star this month is Madeleine Gardella, a 13-year-old student at The Rock School whose contemporary solo won in her division in the Philadelphia semi-finals of Youth America Grand Prix. YAGP regional semi-finals are completed for the year, and we're looking forward to seeing Madeleine and all the other finalists perform in New York next month.

Lauren YAGP PointeGrishko was the founding sponsor of this wonderful competition, which provides performance and scholarship opportunities to so many young dancers, and we continue to provide major support to YAGP and its dancers every year. This support includes free pointe shoes or ballet slippers for winners at the semi-finals, and warm-ups and other gifts for finalists in New York.

We also sponsor the annual Grishko Model Search, open to all finalists, and it's exciting each year to meet the lovely dancer who will appear in our ad in Pointe magazine! At right is our 2011 ad with Lauren Carfolite.

Also in this issue, we have lots of news about Keenan Kampa, including a reminder that the photo contest for her autographed Grishkos ends this Thursday.

By now, many of you have met Faith Rein, our new general manager at Grishko NYC. Read more about Faith below.

Wishing you all a happy spring!

Sincerely,
All of us at Grishko

Suede Tips

Suede TipsGrishko suede tips are a perfect solution for dancers who require enhanced traction on pointe.

The tips, made of very thin and flexible suede, are designed to cover the whole platform, folding over the pleats. They can be trimmed to fit any platform size, and they are applied using specialty cobbler's glue.

Suede tips, worn by both students and professionals (including Keenan Kampa - see below - and Diana Vishneva), are available either as a custom-ordered added feature or separately (most dancers take the shoes and tips to a cobbler for application).

Shoe Contest

Keenan's shoesThis is the last week to enter our contest to win Keenan Kampa's autographed pointe shoes, plus an exciting Grishko gift bag.

All photographs must be received by Thursday, March 15, after which judging will begin for the Grand Prize and three runners-up.

Keenan in Dance Spirit

Dance Spirit - Keenan KampaWe featured a personal interview with Keenan Kampa last month, after the news broke about her historic invitation to join the Mariinsky Ballet.

This month, Keenan graces the cover of Dance Spirit magazine, with a feature article and 5-page photo spread inside - wearing her Grishko pointe shoes, of course! (Look carefully at the photos and you'll see her suede tips.)

Faith Rein

joins Grishko NYC

Faith ReinWe are pleased to introduce our new retail general manager, Faith Rein, who joined Judy Weiss at the New York store last month.

Originally from Long Island, Faith studied dance, music and theater and acted professionally after moving to California, with appearances on television series including All in the Family, Good Times, What's Happening and The Jeffersons, and recorded with Motown Records. She went on to become a coach for cheer and dance teams, and a territory manager for Cheerleader Danzteam.

Since her return to New York nine years ago, Faith has focused on dance and arts marketing, and she currently serves on the advisory boards for Young Choreographer's Festival, J. Chen Project and Dance Iquail. "I try to work with groups of people who touch me, whose mission I appreciate, and I connect them with people who can help," she says. Her freelance work involves helping artists with promotion and finding performance and funding opportunities.  "After coaching over a thousand kids, I still have it in my head," she says of her current role as mentor and advisor.

Working for Grishko was "an opportunity I couldn't pass up," she says.  "I've always loved the product and the company, and I've known Judy for years; we're very sympatico."

In addition to managing the store and providing customer service, Faith hopes to expand Grishko's events, community involvement and outreach.

Madeleine Gardella

Madeleine - YAGP RequiemMadeleine Gardella , a 13-year-old student at The Rock School for Dance Education in Philadelphia, is building an impressive portfolio of professional and pre-professional accomplishments.

This year, her contemporary solo won her first place in her division at the Youth America Grand Prix semi-finals in Philadelphia, where she qualified for the New York finals next month. After touring as Clara in 2010's Radio City Christmas Spectacular in Boston and Providence, she was chosen for the 2011 New York season. She and her mother sublet a New York apartment for three months to allow Madeleine to rehearse through October and appear in over 100 performances in November and December (another dancer appeared in the other half of the schedule).

Madeleine began studying at The Rock with a summer intensive at age ten, followed by two years of part-time training. This year, she became a full-time day student, attending from 10:30 AM to 6 or 7 PM and completing her academics through an online charter school.

Madeleine - KitriHer strong feet and technique inspired the faculty to put her on pointe during the summer intensive. "They thought she should be doing pointe, and she got her first shoes the first day," recalls her mother, Ann.

Madeleine is a big fan of Grishko pointe shoes, which "form to her feet and make them look great," says Ann, "and we like the way they break in." She wears 2007 with a Medium shank for class, while for performance "nothing tops the ProFlex" says Ann. "She likes to call them her 'insti-shoes' because they feel great almost as soon as she puts on a new pair. They are quiet too - a bonus!"

Because The Rock's dress code allows any style of black leotard, Madeleine wears many Grishko leotards (as well as tights). In the leos, "I love the high cut, which makes my legs look longer but is still secure, the intricate designs and the fabric. They fit really well - I could sleep in them!" she says.

Madeleine was a competitive dancer for four years in multiple genres, but has focused more and more on ballet and now competes only at YAGP. In addition to her contemporary win, for her classical solo she made the top 12 in Philadelphia and placed third in Denver (where she was visiting her co-Clara, with whom she became close friends during the Christmas Spectacular season).

Madeleine with AlinaHer contemporary piece, Requiem, was choreographed by Francisco Gella. "We found his choreography on YouTube and loved it, so I contacted him with photos of Madeleine and he wanted to work with her," says Ann. They spent five days with Gella in California, where Ann took video of his choreography, instructions and corrections for Madeleine to study back home. "I'm so glad he did the choreography," Madeleine says. "He has a unique, dynamic style that is enjoyable both to watch and perform, and it's very fluid and challenging at the same time."

When she's not dancing, one of Madeleine's favorite things to do is to meet the dancers she most admires. She's building a collection of photographs of herself with these dancers, including Royal Ballet principal Alina Cojocaru ("her IDOL!" says Ann).

"I have a burning passion to become a principal dancer in The Royal Ballet," Madeleine says with characteristic enthusiasm. "The dancers there inspire me so much." She loves traditional, classical ballet, and her favorite steps to perform include jumps and turns. "She jumps higher than some of the boys," says Ann, "as if she had helium under that tutu!"

Q. Why do dancers use suede tips or darn their platforms?

A. Suede tips and darning are used for different reasons.

Darning creates a sewn-in ridge around the edge of the platform. This can enlarge the platform very slightly - but enough for some dancers to feel the difference - and it provides a ridge that can help with balance. When I was dancing, we sometimes darned the whole platform, to protect the satin and help extend the life of the box, but this takes so long that it's rare to see it done today. I see plenty of dancers who darn the edge, though.

Suede tips are mostly for traction, but they also protect the satin in the platform and pleats from unsightly tears. While tips are sometimes thought of as being for beginners, many professionals and pre-professionals use them. Tips provide extra security when dancers know they'll be performing on slippery floors, or unknown floors. Some dancers get tips applied as part of a custom order, but Grishko also offers separate tips, which we stock at the New York store. These need specialty cobbler's glue and precise fitting, so we always recommend that dancers take them to a shoemaker for application.
