Greetings!
Back to school is one of our favorite seasons! Just like students heading back to academic schooling, dancers at this time are setting new goals, for the upcoming year and beyond, and thinking about how they can best achieve them.
This year, as always, Grishko looks forward to providing each of you with the highest-quality and most up-to-date products, made with today's aspiring dancers in mind.
We hope that you will never hesitate to come to us with your questions about Grishko's exciting products, or about pointe fitting. At our New York City retail location, Judy and Zoe have a wealth of knowledge that they are always happy to share with dancers who come to the store or send questions via facebook or email. (And if you're in the New York area, don't miss our fabulous anniversary sale later this month!)
As we head into a new dance year, we look forward to meeting you and wish you all the best for success and happiness!
Sincerely,
All of us here at Grishko |

Grishko Donates to Stavna Ballet
Grishko retailers Marti Morgan and Catherine Woodson have begun sponsorship of the new contemporary ballet company Stavna Ballet, based in Richmond, Virginia. Marti and Catherine own Pointe Dance Boutique in nearby Midlothian. "Stavna Ballet was founded in late 2010 and has already become a strong presence within the Richmond dance community," they say.
Marti and Catherine have donated Grishko slippers to the company and provided shoes, tights and costumes for Stavna's summer gala in August. They have pledged continuing sponsorship, and Grishko has contributed by donating pointe shoes for each of Stavna's female dancers.
"We have proudly carried Grishko slippers and pointe shoes since we opened in January 2007 and look forward to our continued success for many more years!" say Marti and Catherine. Grishko celebrates their contribution to their dance community, and we are honored to participate in their sponsorship of Stavna Ballet. |

Pink Ribbon Knits
Grishko's Pink Ribbon Knits were created to help support breast cancer research. These lovely pieces - including boy-cut shorts, legwarmers and a V-neck sweater with 3/4 sleeves - are finely knit of very soft acrylic and Lycra, in black with a knitted-in pink ribbon. Like our other beautiful knitwear, the Pink Ribbon collection is crafted in the U.S.A. exclusively for Grishko. Grishko Rising Star:
Finlay Doyle
Finlay Doyle is a 12-year-old student at School of American Ballet, official school of New York City Ballet, where she began her training four years ago and enters the intermediate level this year.
Finlay's first pointe shoe was Grishko 2007, and now she is very happy with our new Triumph. "She loves them," says her mother, Robin Kochan-Doyle, who also attended SAB as a teen. Finlay enjoys the comfort of the shoes and how pretty they look on her feet, and also the option of harder shanks.
Judy is enjoying getting to know this lovely and promising young dancer, and Finlay and Robin appreciate the skill, time and attention to detail that Judy devotes to each fitting. "She really understands Finlay and she's very straightforward," says Robin. "What I like about Judy is that, even though I am hard to fit and can take up a lot of her time, every fitting is always very focused on finding the absolute perfect shoe," Finlay adds. "If Judy doesn't like it, she doesn't give up!" They also marvel at how Judy remembers every detail from one fitting to another.

Fitting Notes
with Judy Weiss
Q: How do you recommend breaking in new shoes?
A: Before you wear your shoes for class or performance, there are a few things you can do to get the break-in process off to a good start.
Start with a little flattening of the crown. (The crown is the rounded shape of the box over the tops of your toes.) Place the thumbs of both hands on the crown of the box and gently press down. This will soften the glue a bit and flatten out any excess height or roundness. The box will also widen slightly when you flatten the crown. See photo at left.
Try working the shank gently to help the arch conform to your foot. Put your thumb at the heel of the shank, with the rest of your hand inside the shoe. With your other hand, press against the sole at the 3/4 area, flexing the heel of the shoe. See photo at right.
To get a great demi-pointe, wait until your ribbons and elastics are sewn on and then use your feet for break-in. Stand in first position at the barre. On both feet, gently roll up through demi-pointe to pointe. Roll down through demi-pointe back to flat. Continue rolling up and down until you feel that your shoes are flexing nicely in demi-pointe.
These methods are helpful for virtually any new pointe shoe. Depending on the style of shoe and the individual dancer's foot, I may use a few other ways to help break-in along.
What you absolutely need to avoid is vigorous break-in methods! If you do too much, you will "kill" the shoe and lose the support it provides. Never pound on the shoe, break it with a door or use water to soften the box. Gentle pressure and the natural warmth of your hands and feet are all that is needed to facilitate break-in, which will continue as you wear the shoes.
