President's Message
Leonard Simpson, RFC®, AIF®
20/20 Financial Advisers of Sacramento, LLC
Last week I traveled to the East Coast to work with one of my partners out of our Florida office. This was my second trip in the past 6 weeks. My partner has been in the industry for about 15 years starting right out of college with a large life insurance company. Early in his career he obtained both his CFP® and the CHFC® designations. He has a great practice consisting mostly of professionals and business owners many with young children. His clients love him.
The purpose of my trip to Florida was to work with his clients in the area of risk management. You see, my partner's passion is managing money not talking about life and disability insurance. So consequently many of his clients are not adequately insured. Yet most of us would agree that risk management is fundamental to a sound financial plan.
What is our role as Financial Planners? What are our responsibilities to our clients and their families? Do we not have a responsibility and obligation to our clients to review and address their insurance coverage as part of an overall Comprehensive Financial Plan, and to make sure that any deficiencies are taken care of? Helping our clients managing their assets may be more appealing than talking about insurance, but it is only one aspect of their financial well being.

Financial Planning Days Comes to Sacramento
The Financial Planning Association® (FPA®), the Foundation for Financial Planning, Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards (CFP Board) and the U.S. Conference of Mayors announced a major initiative to provide free financial education and programming to underserved populations throughout the U.S. The first-of-its kind effort is slated to involve thousands of financial planners and consumers with the support of numerous cities in a series of "Financial Planning Days" scheduled for October 2010.
Through a series of clinics, qualified and experienced financial planners will provide free, no-strings attached, financial advice and education to underserved communities, young adults and individuals facing special life circumstances or crises.
"There are millions of Americans who need trusted financial advice, but who do not have easy access to it. Combining the collective resources of four prominent organizations with proven track records in consumer financial outreach allows us to offer a much-needed solution, teach communities about the financial planning process, and empower individuals in need with information to help improve their financial situations," said the Financial Planning Days organizers. "Our groups - and the thousands of stakeholders we represent - are committed to making a positive impact on as many Americans as possible to help them reach their financial goals."

Thank you to all who participated in the "Internship" survey conducted in May. Below is a recap of survey highlights:
The survey was sent to all FPANC members with an approximate 20% participation rate.
18% of respondents do offer internships, while 82% do not.
Of those offering internship positions, financial planning students or recent graduates were preferred versus experienced planners. Overwhelmingly, the internship positions are not related to the school year or school credit.
The hours per week required of an intern ranged from 8-24 hours.
60% of those offering internship positions see the intern as potential employees.
Top three duties deemed appropriate for interns: o Organize client data & input into software o Research for clients (e.g. cost basis) o Various projects
Top three benefits for the firm offering internships: o Additional staffing o Research o Dedicated staffing to various projects
Top three reasons firms don't have internship positions: o No perceived need o No available time to train/supervise o Negative previous experience
While the survey was not scientific, it does reveal some good information about our region. If you have comments, questions or suggestions regarding survey questions related to career development and job opportunities, please contact me at Debbie.Grose@LighthouseFinancialPlanning.com.
In national news, FPA Denver 2010 will have many great opportunities for students at the national convention. Details are still being worked on, but here is a highlight of opportunities:
Financial Planning Challenge - students will be involved in a "jeopardy" style contest on Saturday, October 9th. Students will then present their financial plan on Monday, October 11th.
Student Reception Friday - October 8th
Young Professional General Session Saturday - October 9th followed by a Student / Young Professionals educational track. During this educational track, there are plans for an internship, student chapter, and career development discussion. Students / Young Professionals will then join the rest of the conference attendees for the opening general session.
A "Buddy System"- An opportunity to connect with a member of the NexGen and MPACT communities, members of the Career Development committee, and FPA of Colorado (host chapter) members. This "buddy system" is intended to provide the students with a key contact at the conference to help them learn how to use the exhibit hall, learn how to pick the best educational track for their needs, etc.
On a Side Note: Thank you to everyone who submitted a scholarship application at the end of July. The panel will be assembling soon to announce a winner!

Mr. Freedman, who is a member of FPA's board, was recently interviewed for one of the chapter's newsletter which was well-received by the members. Luckily for us, they are sharing the entire interview with the various chapters. Just click on the link below for more information:
