Shale gas industry leaders coming to town
A number of companies are vying to bring new supplies of ethane from the Marcellus Shale in the US Appalachian Basin to Sarnia-Lambton; and the announcements are harbingers of bright days ahead for Sarnia-Lambton and its petrochemical sector.
On May 19th the Sarnia-Lambton Shale Gas Meeting will bring key players in North America's natural gas and petrochemical industries together to discuss the potential that ethane derived from Marcellus Shale natural gas holds for the Sarnia-Lambton area.
Organized by the Economic Partnership, the Sustainable Chemistry Alliance and representatives from local and North American energy companies, the event is intended to facilitate discussion between key personnel from producer, mid-stream processor, and end user companies involved in the Marcellus Shale. Invitations to the meeting were sent to over 100 industry leaders. "The purpose is to bring together senior management from the industry to help move their plans forward," noted Mike Ireland, Senior Development Consultant with the Economic Partnership. "We'll also take the opportunity to demonstrate our strong community support, and the capabilities we have in Sarnia-Lambton."
Marijean Morris, Corporate Development at MarkWest Energy, will be one of the key speakers at the conference. In March 2011 MarkWest Energy Partners and Sunoco Logistics announced that the two companies are partnering to deliver Marcellus Shale ethane to Sarnia-Lambton ethane consumers. The companies expect to be transporting up to 65,000 barrels a day of ethane by the third quarter of 2012.

| | NOVA's St. Clair Township plant is slated to receive ethane from the Marcellus Shale Basin |
In the same month Caiman Energy and NOVA Chemicals announced a memo of understanding for the supply of ethane from Caiman's plant in West Virginia to NOVA's Sarnia-Lambton manufacturing facility in St. Clair Township.
In 2010 Kinder Morgan and Buckeye Partners announced plans for pipeline projects, and their desire to supply ethane to Sarnia-Lambton.
Our local industries have traditionally received their feedstock for ethylene production from Alberta. This new and near-by supply of ethane will provide an affordable, abundant, and reliable feedstock for ethylene production in Sarnia-Lambton.
Over half of the world's supply of ethylene is used to make plastics that are commonly used in trash bags and packaging materials. Ethylene is also used in some lesser known applications such as anesthetics, welding gas, and to ripen fruit.
As companies look toward Sarnia-Lambton as a key player in the new Marcellus Shale value chain it is demonstrated yet again why this area is a key player on the global chemical stage. |
