Dear Log Rolling Friends and Family,

 Hello fellow log rollers!

The sun is out, flowers are in bloom, and it's Memorial Day weekend! TIME TO START OUR 2011 LOG ROLLING SEASON! Once again our number of tournaments has grown larger than ever before, and we do hope you can make it to as many of these events as possible.

We also have already posted the 2011 rules (see below for significant changes), rankings, and membership form on our website: http://www.uslogrolling.com

Please take a moment to review the updated rules and let us know of any questions or concerns before we get "rolling" into this season.

Finally, like always, we are always in need of volunteers. I'm sure every tournament director could use extra hands at their tournaments, and our board can always use volunteers for Rules, Ranking, Property Management, and Membership Services.

So your next steps after reading this newsletter:

1. Send in your USLRA membership form today so that I don't have to chase you down at LWC. :)

2. Mark all of these amazing contests on your calendar.

3. Get in the water and start practicing!

See you on the log!

Sincerely,
Shana Martin
USLRA President

New USLRA Board Members
Please welcome our new USLRA/ILRA Board Members for 2011!  Also, please take the time to thank Alex Waite and Pat Burns for their years of hard work and dedication to the US Log Rolling Association.

Sam Hadley:

I have just graduated from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, with a double major in Sport Management and Business and Marketing Education. I have had internships with the Minnesota Vikings Training Camp as a Sales and
Marketing Intern and with DLW Timberworks Lumberjack Shows as a Marketing Intern. Along with that I have announced lumberjack shows for three years and taught lessons at the St Paul JCC for two years. I have been around the sport since the age of seven and think I could be of assistance in not only promoting but also bettering the sport.

Laura Batson:

For those of you who don't know me, my name is Laura Batson and I am a parent of a log roller as well as a fan of the sport. My daughter Ella has been log rolling for about 3 1/2 years at the Madison West YMCA and Lake Wingra under the direction of Shana Martin. We both love the sport! I currently work as a lunch lady at West High in Madison. I did graduate from UW Stevens Point in 1986 with a BS in fashion merchandising and a minor in communication. My past work experience includes various retail management jobs as well as visual merchandising jobs. My strengths include good quality organizational and communication skills as well as loads of customer satisfaction experience.

I am happy to join the board and assist in supporting and strengthening the exciting sport of log rolling. It has been a fun sport to be involved with the past few years, and this summer I may finally attempt to really learn how to roll myself!

Marcel Scott:

I come from a long line of logrollers, lumberjacks, and woodsmen. I am a 6th generation lumberjack and my family history is very dear to me.

I've been logrolling and doing lumberjack shows long before I could even tie my shoes.

What I have to bring to the table is not only my experience and knowledge of the sport, but I also have the privilege of being able to talk to my family about their past experiences and views as well.

I represent a voice from your "Cousin's from up North" so to speak. Of course, our one common goal is to further grow and develop the sport and get more involvement from people around the globe.

It's such a unique and exciting sport to share with others and I want to help keep it that way for more generations to come.

Karl Buschhaus:

I believe there is a strong future for the sport of log rolling at all levels, from elite professionals to the novice amateur. I hope to serve the membership by drawing on my experience in engineering, marketing and law. Although I am a recent entrant to the world of log rolling, my children and I truly enjoy the camaraderie of the sport and we try to make it to as many events as we can.

Win a Log Donated by Lumberjack Enterprises!

In 2011, profits and donations from the championships will be donated to the Huntington's Disease Society of America Great Lakes Region (HDSA-GL).  Huntington's Disease is a hereditary, degenerative brain disorder that slowly diminishes an individual's ability to walk, think, feel, talk, and reason.  The disease usually strikes young adults between the ages of 30 and 40, but children as young as two have developed the disease.  Right now 1 in 10,000 Americans are at risk for this disease, which there is currently no effective treatment or cure.

Money raised for HDSA-GL by the Midwest Logrolling Championships will go directly to researching possible treatments and cures, regional patient and family care, and regional family and community education.  HDSA's national and international research will also benefit people with diseases related to Huntington's - diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and many dystrophies.  The TEAM who raises and/or donates the most money in addition to their entry fee will receive a log donated by Lumberjack Enterprises!  The highest individual highest fundraiser will win an ipod nano!  Then, based on amount of money raised, we will let competitors pick from various prizes including theme park tickets, gift certificates, shirts, and more! All competitors and volunteers will go home with a prize!

Set up your online donation page at: http://www.firstgiving.com/hdsa-greatlakes  and start collecting donations TODAY!  Please make this page YOUR OWN - add a photo of you log rolling and some personal words about how you want to WIN THAT LOG!

What will I get for coming all the way down to Madison?
Top three in each division will receive a unique award (surprise!) and other fun prizes donated by local businesses!  Throughout the competition random competitor names will be drawn for prizes such as gift certificates, hats, etc.  Plus you get another chance to improve your ranking for the 2012 USLRA Super Series!  And don't forget, if you are the highest donating competitor, you'll go home with an ipod nano or log for your team!

What will we eat?
Madison Logrolling and Trader Joe's will provide a BBQ with all of the meat, buns, and fixins'. Feel free to bring drinks and side dishes!

Do I have to be a USLRA member to compete?

Log Roller Bio:
Alec Duffy

Alec

 Age: 15

Hometown: Hayward, WI

How did you get involved in Log Rolling?
My dad began to teach me when I was young at the Lumberjack Bowl

How long have you been rolling?
I started when I was 4, so I have been rolling for 11 years.

What is your favorite log rolling memory?
We had family members come to my grandparents cabin. We have a log there and even though most of the relatives didn't know how to roll it was still fun to teach them. Rolling with my family provides the same atmosphere as rolling with competitors because in the world of logrolling we are all a family.

Who are your log rolling mentors?
My father Brian Duffy is my logrolling mentor. Even though he has snapped his Achilles Tendon he still goes out and competes. My father inspires me to train hard and have fun while I do it.

What is your favorite competition?
I would have to say that my favorite competition is the Hayward Lumberjack World Championships because it is my home town and i can roll to represent what the River Rollers are about.

What other activities are you involved in?
I am on the Football, Hockey, and Golf teams. I have a job at Tremblay's Sweet Shop in Hayward and I do some farm work. I am a current member of the Young Republicans group and the Freshman class board at my school. I completed a hurricane pride leadership training with some of my close friends on the hockey team.
USLRA Judge's Training
Judge's Training

It is very important to the USLRA to keep the quality of judging at events as high and fair as possible. Once again Larry Waite will be hosting a judge's training before the Midwest Log Rolling Championships on June 11th. If you plan to judge at any log rolling tournament this summer, it is strongly recommended you attend. The training will last less than an hour and food will be provided by Madison Log Rolling. If you are able to attend the training that starts at 10am at Wingra Park in Madison, please e-mail Larry Waite to reserve your spot: lwwaite101@gmail.com
