The CHATLine

for August 22, 2012

Presbytery Office Hours: Monday-Friday 9:00 am-5:00 pm

Greetings!

This Saturday is our annual STEPS leadership event!  If you missed online registration, it's not too late to join us!  Walk-in registration is $40.  Go to www.capresbytery.org/steps for more information.

Also.... If you're attending the STEPS event, consider carpooling on Saturday.  Parking will be tight and if attendees can arrive together, this can ease some of the congestion that may occur.

Are You Using the Correct CAP Email Address???
EmailTwo years ago we updated the presbytery's website and chose a new domain.  Along with the change to the website, we also changed all of the staff email address.  For two years, we had the old addresses forwarding to the new addresses, but have now ended this service.  Please check your address book and confirm that you are sending emails to staff members at capresbytery.org.

If you have any questions about this process, don't hesitate to contact
Cheryl Glenn, the presbytery's Director of Communications.
Resources of the Week
ResourcesA Faith of Her Own: Women of the Old Testament by J. Ellsworth Kalas - The author focuses on women who were crucial, some in obvious and some in less obvious ways, to the story of the Old Testament. He examines the Scriptures to see what we can learn about them and from them, including their defining characteristics, how they fit into as well as shaped the Old Testament story, and how their stories of strength, courage, perseverance, and faith have shaped our lives as believers today.

The Barefoot Way: A Faith Guide for Youth, Young Adults, and the People Who Walk with Them by Dori Grinenko Baker - Each of us has our own faith journey full of stories. Some stories may be funny, tragic, uplifting, or heart wrenching. They help us to connect with God and each other as we journey together and share our experiences. This book is about our spiritual journeys. You will find an array of stories from those who have found God in the most unexpected places: a walk on the beach, a conversation with an old friend, a bus ride to school, and more. A four
step practice is used for theological reflection on each story (Listen, Immerse in the feelings, View it wider, and explore actions and aha moments). This resource will help youth begin to think about the presence of God in their everyday lives.

Johns Island Presbyterian Church

Center for Christian Studies

Presents Annual Lecture Series

Fairbairn
Don Fairbairn

On September 29-30, 2012 the Center for Christian Studies will host a lecture series entitled, God Has Spoken by His Son: Jesus in Hebrews. This lectureship will feature Dr. Donald Fairbairn, the Robert E. Cooley Professor of Early Christianity at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary.

News articles and documentaries on the History and Discovery channels often focus on scholarly research into who Jesus was. Much of contemporary research-and the popular articles and TV documentaries that rely on it-depict Jesus as a man whose "divinity" means essentially that he has a special connection to God. But is that really all? Or is Jesus really-as the church has historically claimed-God the Son who has come down to earth personally to save us? These lectures will focus on one of the most central New Testament passages about the identity of Jesus --- Hebrews 1-2. Please join us for this exploration of who Jesus is and how his identity affects us as Christians.

Lecture Series Schedule:

September 29, 4:00pm

Jesus: Eternal Son or Honored Man? (Hebrews 1)

September 30, 10:00am [sermon]

Lower than the Angels:

Jesus' Incarnate Life (Hebrews 2:1-13)

September 30, 4:00pm

A Merciful and Faithful High Priest:

Jesus' Death and Our Salvation (Hebrew 2:14-17)

Each lecture will be followed by coffee and refreshments

with Dr. Fairbairn in the Fellowship Hall.

Presbyterian Pilgrimage Weekend:
A Time to Renew Your Faith -- October 4-7, 2012

The Message by Peterson translates Matthew 11:28-30:

"Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me - watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy or ill fitting on you. Keep company with me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly."

Pilgrimage
Does this sound like you? "Tired, worn out, burned out?" Then the Word
may be calling you to Presbyterian Pilgrimage, a short course in Christianity. This three-day spiritual weekend is designed to strengthen your faith, give you a sense of purpose and a new commitment to Christ, and allow you to impact the environment in which you live, worship and work.

And what better place to be closer to Christ than at Camp Saint Christopher on Seabrook Island? It is the ideal place to begin that renewal. You will meet new friends and enjoy incredible food for both the stomach and for the soul.

Adair McCoy, a committed layperson, has been called to be the moderator of the October Pilgrimage. He, his spiritual advisors and all the staff will be there to help you get that sense of purpose to which Christ invites you.

If you would like more information, please contact one of the individuals below or visit our website at: http://www.scpresbyterianpilgrimage.org/. Participant applications are available online or from the individuals below. The cost for the three day weekend is $315. Needs-based scholarships are available, on a limited basis.

Contact SC Presbyterian Outreach Chair Diane Dunham at (843) 873-7404 (dwdunham@sc.rr.com) or SC Presbyterian Pilgrimage Registrar J. C. Simmons at (843) 871- 3944 (jsimmons14@sc.rr.com).
