A Laboratory for Creative Mission:
Innovative Worshiping Communities
are Flourishing Throughout Pittsburgh Presbytery
by Sue Washburn
Some call themselves churches, while others use the name community or fellowship. Some worship in French, others in Vietnamese. Some use formal language in their liturgy; in others, words like "dude" are sprinkled liberally throughout both worship and fellowship gatherings. In all their variety, the vibrant new faith communities emerging throughout Pittsburgh Presbytery have sealed the presbytery's reputation as a laboratory for creative mission.
New churches are like the research and development arm of the presbytery, says Vera White, Pittsburgh Presbytery's director of new church development. It's virtually impossible to find a neighborhood in Pittsburgh that doesn't already have a Presbyterian church or two, yet the presbytery has found that investing spiritually and financially in new ministries can benefit all of its congregations.

Peacemaking Conference | July 11-15, 2012
Ghost Ranch Conference Center in Abiquiu, New Mexico
The conference theme "Restorers of Streets to Live In" is focused on building caring communities to be 'restorers' of the many broken places in our church and world.
The high mountain desert of Ghost Ranch provided inspiration for many of Georgia O'Keefe's paintings and will serve as the perfect place for our community to 'think outside of the box,' experience ways to share stories, and connect through social media to peacemaking ministries.
