MANUFACTURING IN MICHIGAN

Would it surprise you to know manufacturing is leading Michigan's economic recovery?

"In January 2011, the Michigan manufacturing sector employed 498,000, comprising 12.7 percent of total non-farm employment in the state. Manufacturing jobs increased by 6.3 percent from March 2010 to March 2011, more than double the growth seen in any other sector. During this time employment grew by 75,700 jobs; 30,000 of these jobs were in the manufacturing sector."

What about manufacturing in the United States?

  • Producing 21 percent of global manufactured products, the United States is the world's largest manufacturing economy.
  • The second largest manufacturing economy: Japan at 13 percent, followed by China at 12 percent.
  • U.S. manufacturers are the most productive in the world, producing twice as much as workers in the next 10 leading manufacturing economies.

These statistics were part of the presentation given by Mike Johnston of the Michigan Manufacturers Association at the Berrien County Manufacturers Council meeting last week.  Mr. Johnston also covered a number of legislative issues on both state and federal levels and how decisions being made right now will affect the future of manufacturing.

For more information about the current state of manufacturing, check out this MMA News Article.

MAKING IT IN MICHIGAN

Some manufactured products start out as seeds!  Ag-based manufacturing is on the increase too.  From biofuels to personal care products, beverages to household care, new products are being introduced at a very vigorous rate.

The MSU Product Center is offering a conference, "Making it in Michigan", featuring topics of interest for entrepreneurs at every stage involved with ag-related businesses.

The conference is October 19, so please check out the website for more information: Making it in Michigan

From the event website:

"This is the one day that every entrepreneur, producer, buyer and processor in food and agricultural businesses needs to attend. Learn how to bring your dreams and goals to reality."

LINK OF THE MONTH

Something all of Michigan is famous for... those beautiful fall color tours.  Just because it's raining here doesn't mean there aren't still opportunities to take in some great color displays.  To get an idea of where to go, Maddie picked this as our "Link of the Month".

The mission of the Southwestern Michigan Economic Growth Alliance is to promote and support the retention and expansion of existing industrial businesses, to attract new businesses, and to encourage the diversification of the economic base in southwestern Michigan.
