President's Message
Happy New Year! Thanks to all of you for helping make 2009 a most successful year for Capital City Republican Women. Our accomplishments included helping with the annual Lincoln Day Dinner, hosting interesting guest speakers at the monthly luncheons, sponsoring successful fundraising events, supporting our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and donating funds to Republican women candidates. The year ended with two new records: Our membership grew to 190 and 96 women attended the annual Women in Red Membership Tea. These are accomplishments of which we all can be proud.
In the coming months I hope each of you will continue to encourage friends and acquaintances to join CCRW. Through your efforts we should be able to surpass 200 members.
If you missed the Membership Tea please be sure to send in your 2010 dues. Renewal by the 15th of this month is needed, as that is the deadline for sending our membership list to the National Federation of Republican Women.
Our monthly membership luncheons will continue to be held on the second Monday of each month at the Prospector. I look forward to seeing you there and welcome suggestions regarding speakers or topics.
Beginning with this issue, a new section has been added to our monthly newsletter. It is dedicated solely to recording comments from our membership. If you have a particular burning issue or statement you would like to make, email it to me for inclusion. Obviously we would like to keep comments close to our "mission" - advancement of women in politics - but all will be accepted and will not be altered within reasonable bounds.
Depending upon the number of responses, it may be necessary to print more than one in each newsletter. But it is your opportunity to "sound off". Your ideas are important as they provide a more personal dimension from our general membership.
I look forward to hearing from you and working together this coming year.

CCRW monthly meeting - Prospector 11:45 (doors open) - 1 p.m. $15 for lunch Guest Speaker: Lt Governor Craig Campbell
Lieutenant Governor Craig E. Campbell came to Alaska with his family in 1981 when he was a Captain in the United States Air Force. He served on the Anchorage Assembly for nine and a half years and in 2002, Governor Frank Murkowski appointed Craig as the Adjutant General for the State of Alaska and the Commander of the Alaska National Guard and the Commissioner of the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. He was re-appointed to that position by Gov. Sarah Palin and was appointed Lieutenant Governor in July 2009, when Lieutenant Governor Sean Parnell became Alaska's tenth governor. |

Thank You, CCRW The first phone call to my home the morning of my CCRW State House fundraiser was from Ginger Johnson - not my campaign manager, which is the usual. "Check the weather, Mia. It's foggy here today," she said. When my husband, Andrew, checked his professional pilot weather sources we realized the fog was hovering at about 100 feet off the ground and it appeared my flight from Anchorage might not have a chance. But the future was bright! And by early afternoon it was one of those glorious days in Juneau that is unrivaled anywhere else. Thank you, Capital City Republican Women, for helping make my future truly bright by hosting a fundraiser in support of my effort to return the District 27 House seat in South Anchorage to a Republican. And a special thanks to Paulette Simpson for coming up with the idea to invite guests to bid on auction items with the donations going to my campaign. It was a great idea -- one I will continue to use as a model for future fundraisers. I also want to express appreciation to the CCRW members who prepared food for the event and donated auction items. Laraine and Romer Derr's "Chez Alaska" cooking school provided a great setting for the event.
I truly appreciate your support and hope we can win this seat and send a message that Alaska is "open for business" and that we welcome resource development and a bright future for Alaska.
Thank you, all. After my fundraiser in Juneau this past week I am flying high! Mia Costello District 27 House Candidate www.votemia.com

SUPPORT OUR TROOPS (Below are a couple of letters of thanks)
Hi CCRW, I hope you had a wonderful Christmas! It was just another workday for us, but I planned a 4.25 mile Holiday race here and it was a huge success! I wanted to help people forget the fact that we're away from family and friends and about 170 people participated.

I apologize for the delay, but we've been ridiculously busy here so it's been difficult to get the whole platoon together...but finally got a platoon picture (with just a couple soldiers missing) with the amazing FDS sweaters we were able to get because of your group! Thanks so much and we cannot thank you enough for supporting us!
Have a Happy New Year!!!
Sincerely, Linda
Dear Capital City Republican Women (Juneau AK),
I would like to thank you on behalf of F 207th Theater Aviation Company (Forward) for the care packages you have sent us. Your Alaskan Soldiers greatly appreciate the time, effort, and thoughtfulness represented by the high quality of your care packages. We would like to also thank the generosity of the Juneau residents who also contributed to the care packages, and all those who were involved.
Your kind words, and actions go a long way with us, and bring smiles to our faces as we are told that we have mail. And just knowing that our efforts and commitments are appreciated, boosts our morale.

Republican women on the move
In an
effort to reclaim seats lost to Democrats across the country and in our own
state, Republican women are stepping up to challenge incumbents. Those of you who follow national news
are surely pleased to know that Sen. Harry Reid is being challenged in Nevada
by a Republican woman; Republican Carly Fiorina is challenging Sen. Barbara
Boxer in California and Republican women are challenging incumbent Democrat
senators in Connecticut, New Hampshire and Colorado.
Here in
Juneau, CCRW recently donated to our own Rep. Cathy Munoz to help insure her
re-election and we also donated to former CCRW member Mia Costello who is
running in District 27 - a traditionally Republican Alaska House seat that fell
to Democrats in 2006. By sticking
together and supporting our own, we can help our Party get our state and our
country on the right track.

Member Spotlight - Joyce Vick
I was born and raised in Alaska. After graduation from Tok High School, I moved to Fairbanks and eventually went to work up at Prudhoe Bay. There I met my husband, Jody, also a lifelong Alaskan.
We raised our two sons in Juneau and have always been active in the community. I work as a grants accountant for the Tlingit-Haida Regional Housing Authority and am currently serving as Treasurer of CCRW.
Yes, I am the one who keeps the books and files the APOC reports! My parents have always been very supportive of everything that I have ever done and I have tried to show my sons that anything is possible. We were extremely proud when Sen. Lisa Murkowski recommended our oldest son, Geno, for the U.S. Naval Academy. He graduated from there in May 2009 and is now stationed in Virginia. When Geno told me he had been assigned to the USS Mahan he said, "You know, when I'm done with my five years, I am coming back home to Juneau." Of course, I was happy to hear that and said, "That's good." Then he said, "You know, mom, if I like it, I may sign up for more time" and I said, "That's good too!" Our youngest son, Alex, is attending the University of Nevada in Reno studying Sports Medicine. He is also on the Cheer/Stunt Team for the University and is working as an intern with the Athletic Department.
If there is not a CCRW function going on, you will find me either keeping score at the hockey rink for the adult league and the JDHS hockey team, running the clock for JDHS Football team, or umpiring for the Gastineau Channel Little League or the JDHS baseball team. I am also the president of the Valley Toastmasters Club and serve on several other non-profit boards.
I am a Republican because I believe it is important for each of us to take personal responsibility for our lives by working hard and getting involved in the community. That's how we can make Juneau or where ever we choose to be, a great place to live.

Calling All Quilters!
Once again, we are asking CCRW members who enjoy sewing and
quilting to help us make another great patriotic quilt that we can auction at
Lincoln Day Dinner February 18. We
will have the quilt packets available at our lunch Monday and you will have just
2 weeks to get your square done and back to us so the squares can be sewn
together and quilted. If you
can't make it Monday, let us know and we will connect with you this
weekend. We need at least 12 women
to participate.

Just say NO to current health care legislation
by Kelly Shattuck
There is no disputing that health insurance premiums have been increasing at an alarming rate in recent years. But somewhere during the search for long term and sustainable solutions, it seems we have abandoned common sense and instead embraced the flawed theory that health care costs will be reduced by restricting, taxing and punishing health insurance companies and consumers.
Very little in either the House or Senate bills addresses the cost of medical care, which is what drives and determines health insurance premiums. The medical cost increases are unsustainable at their current rate and attempts to completely reform a system without addressing those costs seem feeble at best.
The proposals that have been set forth to this point are numerous, confusing, and changing often with each discussion, each back-door deal. What is becoming increasingly clear is that the one-size-fits-all approach to health reform will actually increase costs to Alaskans, and decrease access. It's estimated that sixty percent of Alaskans who currently own high-deductible individual health policies will be forced to buy more expensive policies in order to comply with the newly proposed standards. If they can keep their current coverage, the costs will increase at an accelerated rate.
Additionally, "savings" touted by the congress and administration are apparently gained by negotiating with physicians, pharmacies and hospitals to lower Medicare threshold payments. Some of Alaska's Medicare recipients who already face geographical issues when trying to find physicians will find it even more difficult to find physicians willing to cut costs so dramatically while still trying to provide services in our rural communities. Costs to treat persons in rural Alaska will become prohibitive resulting in fewer providers.
The issues are numerous and complex and there are any more flaws in this legislation that require additional debate. Our nation must do something to address the rising costs of health care as well as the uninsured but the current legislation fails to do a good job at either.

Creators of "Not Evil Just
Wrong" to visit Juneau
January 27 & 28, 2010
Revolutionary
filmmakers Phelim McAleer and Ann McElhinney are coming to Alaska in January to
talk about their film Not Evil Just Wrong - The true cost of global warming hysteria.
They will give a presentation at Centennial Hall on Wednesday, January 27 from
5:00 - 6:30 p.m. We will publish
their full Juneau schedule when it is finalized - meanwhile, check out their
website and watch the YouTube trailer to see why you won't want to miss hearing
their presentation: www.noteviljustwrong.com
Here's
a brief synopsis of the film:
Global
warming alarmists want Americans to believe that humans are killing the planet.
But Not
Evil Just Wrong, a documentary by Phelim McAleer and Ann McElhinney
that premiered October 18, proves that the only threats to America (and the
rest of the world) are the flawed science and sky-is-falling rhetoric of Al
Gore and his allies in environmental extremism.
Not
Evil Just Wrong warns Americans that their jobs, modest lifestyles and dreams
for their children are at stake. Industries that rely on fossil fuels will be
crippled if the government imposes job-killing regulations on an economy
already mired in recession.
The
damage that would be wrought by these regulations is unjustified by the
science. Not Evil Just Wrong exposes the deceptions that experts,
politicians, educators and the media have been force-feeding the public for
years. Man-made pollution is not melting the polar icecaps. The ocean will not
rise 20 feet in a flash. And the only polar bears dying because of man are the
ones who try to eat men.
Organizations
like Greenpeace whose excesses are roundly condemned in Not Evil Just Wrong persistently
push the same kind of propaganda that prompted world leaders to ban DDT. They
believed environmentalist Rachel Carson's doomsday scenarios about the
mosquito-killing chemical and millions of children in the Third World may have
been infected by malaria and died as a result.
The
documentary notes that the World Health Organization lifted its ban on DDT in
2006, but Al Gore and his allies will not accept that verdict any more than
they will accept the science that discounts theories about global warming. They
are determined to blame humans for everything.
