"Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ on my right, Christ on my left, Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down, Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me, Christ in the mouth of every man who speaks of me, Christ in the eye that sees me, Christ in the ear that hears me." -- Lorica of St. Patrick

Greetings!
Lent is well underway and it's the penitential "giving up" time. I thought I was doing well to give up cappuccino and talk radio (I must admit I'm much calmer these days), but compared to what the early Christians did... "Persons who had committed notorious and scandalous sins were formally required by the Church to do public acts of penance. Beginning on Ash Wednesday, they could not bathe, shave, wear shoes, talk to others, remain with their families, or sleep on a comfortable mattress. (from Why Do Catholics Eat Fish on Friday?). Now that's penance!
Lent is an especially good time to do some serious spiritual reading. Classics like Introduction to the Devout Life by St. Francis deSales or Story of a Soul by St. Therese of Lisieux, stories about saints or converts to Catholicism make great Lenten reading. Ask your Pastor for a recommendation.
May God bless you
throughout this Lenten season,

Okay to Read?
The Imprimatur
People often ask how we decide which books to carry, and sometimes the issue of whether or not a book has an imprimatur comes up. An imprimatur (from the Latin "let it be printed") is the official seal of approval from the Church that a book does not contain anything contrary to the faith. The only books required to have an imprimatur are those concerning Catholic doctrine and morals that are meant for instruction in Catholic schools. So although it is recommended that all books concerning the Catholic faith have an imprimatur, due to the large number of books being published and the limited number of Diocesan resources available to review them, many books are not even submitted for an imprimatur.
So how do we decide which books to carry? Primarily by publisher and author, sometimes based on a recommendation by a good Catholic publication, blog, or person whose opinion we respect. Our goal is to carry books that conform to the magisterial teachings of the Catholic Church, regardless of whether or not they carry an imprimatur. |

Outdoor Rosaries
A Wonderful Tribute to Our Blessed Mother
You've seen them on houses, on churches, on barns, and even on the front of our store! Where do they come from? Many of them are made by Chuck Good of St. Henry, owner of Illuminations. His hand-crafted rosaries are assembled with light-weight aluminum and can be fitted with regular or LED bulbs. They come in a number of sizes and shapes.
If you're interested in learning more about these rosaries, call Chuck at 419-678-3534, or pick up one of his business cards the next time you're in our store. |
