"Socialism is the religion people get when they lose their religion." Richard John Neuhaus

Greetings!
One of the things I miss most about Virginia is its mild winters, where 2 inches of snow could close schools, cancel events, and give everyone a great excuse for "working from home." Ohio winters are much more challenging! Sue and I have managed to keep the store open all but a few hours so far this winter, but if you're needing something in the midst of a blizzard, you'd best call first to make sure we're here. If we're not, we're likely on our way, shoveling as fast as we can!
Stay safe, and pray for an early spring!
God bless,
Ann Stidd Silver Cross Catholic Books & Gifts |

Sister Shannon
New Bremen Native Answers The Call
She used to stop by the store while still discerning her vocation, browsing, chatting, and sharing her journey. One by one, she purchased each volume of the Liturgy of the Hours so that by the time she was accepted as a postulant at Our Lady of the Angels Monastery in Hanceville, Alabama, Shannon Broerman had the entire four-volume set to take with her as well as a few other good books on Franciscan and Carmelite spirituality. While I miss her smiling face and cheerful visits, I know that Mother Angelica has a wonderful new addition to her Order. Please keep Sister Shannon in your prayers! |

New Age
Is It Really New?
Actually, many "New" Age beliefs and practices are old - a mixture of paganism and Eastern religions, modernized with current vocabulary and images.... channeling, crystals, spirit guides, feng shui, Reiki. If you'd like to know more about what the Catholic Church teaches about the New Age movement, there are some excellent books (The New Age Counterfeit by Johnette Benkovic, Catholics and the New Age by Mitch Pacwa, and Ransomed from Darkness by Moira Noonan) and Web sites that are very helpful.

Adoration
If you'd like to devote more time to prayer this Lenten season, consider spending some time each week in Eucharistic Adoration. All parishes in our area have regularly scheduled Adoration hours, and now those hours are posted on the Church Services page of our Web site - a great page to bookmark! |

Rest in Peace
Michael Dubruiel, writer, speaker, and husband of Amy Welborn, passed away on February 3. Many of you may have read books written by Michael or Amy, most of which I carry in my store. Click here to read the column Michael was working on before he died. Please keep Michael, Amy, and their children in your prayers. | | |
