This ain't no race at all, but it will be good preparation for the SUP race at the Savannah Riverkeepers annual PADDLEFEST event on August 20th on the Savannah River in downtown Augusta. ( See more on that here! )

We'll do a one-way, downstream trip of about 7 miles. NO, it's not a long way! The current will take you there if you didn't take a stroke!

The Augusta Canal is the nation's only industrial power canal still in use for its original purpose. Built in 1845 to harness the water and power of the Savannah River, the Augusta Canal offers history, recreation and unique experiences along miles of towpath, trail and waterway. It is one of the very few National Historical Waterways in the United States. The power afforded by the Canal led to the selection of Augusta as the location for the Confederate States Powderworks -- the only buildings ever constructed by the government of Confederate States of America. The 28 Powder Works structures reached along the Canal for two miles. Some features of that past remain there, along with wildlife above and below the water, that make it one of the most unique inland floats in the eastern US -- and there is no better way to SEE it than from a stand up paddleboard!

This race is an accessible and fun length for both experienced stand up paddlers and newcomers. Whether you are equipped with a competitive race board or a stock surf-style SUP, the unique aspect of this relatively short, up-and-then-downstream course will offer just the right balance of challenge for the aggressive competitor, yet remain a fun and enjoyable experience for everyone - even if this is your first attempt to paddle any distance at all. This race is not just an endurance grind!  The setting is in an attractive, downtown urban section of the Savannah River with many features along the way.
