| Greetings! |
We're not at all sure where the summer has gone; hard to believe that it's already mid-July! At QM, we're excited to be using the summer to develop new products that will help you deliver trainings to faculty.
One of those ideas is to create a product that will help you customize QM's content. An amazing 100% of those who responded to our last poll indicated that they wanted to be able to customize content. We're investigating various possibilities, including the use of SoftChalk that may then be accessed from within your own LMS. More about our progress with that project next month...
It was wonderful to meet some of you at last month's first Quality Matters Conference in Baltimore, MD. I certainly walked away with some useful information; and, according to the positive evaluations, you did as well!
This month we're actively soliciting new scenarios that illustrate specific review standards. The author of each scenario that is accepted will receive $25 -- so get those ideas together!
Kind regards,
Diane L. Jackson

| Attention All QM-Based and Independent Trainers! |
Do you have a great standard-based scenario?
If so, consider sharing it with Quality Matters. We're soliciting scenarios for each of the 40 specific review standards. We'll be using these in our workshops and online courses as examples of what "meets" and "doesn't meet" each standard. What's more, QM will pay you $25 for each scenario that is accepted. Acceptance will be determined by a number of criteria including believability, illustrative qualities, etc. To submit a scenario for consideration, email Diane Jackson (djackson@qualitymatters.org) the following information: (1) written description, (2) printscreen of its use, and (3) the specific review standard your scenario refers to. We'll be accepting scenarios through August 31, 2009. |

Standard 2: Measurable Learning Objectives at the Course and Module Levels
This course is offered both online (2 weeks) and onsite (4 hours). It's appropriate for faculty and instructional designers who are developing or who have developed courses but want to learn the purpose of instructional objectives and the importance of aligning the objectives to other course elements.
Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to (1) distinguish between goals and objectives; (2) state the purpose(s) of instructional objectives; (3) describe and discuss Bloom's three learning domain categories; and (4) analyze course objectives and/or construct or revise instructional objectives for use in a course using the ABCD approach. |
| Call for Webinar Proposals! |
QM Webinars Being Scheduled for 2010
QM will be offering webinars with the following theme: "Using QM Outside the Box". For example, are you using QM in F2F classes? Integrating it with courses delivered through open-source software or social networking venues? Doing something else? If so, we want to hear about your ideas, challenges, and solutions! Send a one-page proposal that outlines the project, discusses the objectives, including what attendees will gain, and addresses the outcomes. Additional resources including PowerPoint slides, handouts, etc., can also be sent.
Use the following webinar guidelines to help you develop your proposal: 45 minute presentation, 10-15 minute Q&A, suggestions for polling questions and interactive activities.
If a proposal is accepted, the presenter will be offered a $300 stipend to be paid at the conclusion of the webinar. The proposal submission deadline is Monday, August 17. |
| Conference Report |
"Achieving Quality Through Collaboration"
This year's inaugural conference, "Achieving Quality Through Collaboration" included 64 subscribing institutions from 23 states and international representation and was considered an overwhelming success by all who attended.
Among the highlights was the pre-conference workshop presented by Barbara Frey and Denise King, instructional designers with the University of Pittsburgh, entitled "Standard 8 - Accessibility". The workshop served as a pilot for a new training that will be available later this fall. |
| Training Tips |
| Onsite Workshop
When organizing the workshop, consider the use of a checklist to make sure that all of the pieces are in place. Such a checklist is helpful for someone who may have to jump in at the last minute in case you're unable to complete the organization.
Online Course
On the first day, consider the use of a "online scavenger hunt" to help students become familiar with the different course components and "how-tos" within your LMS. Such scavenger hunts may include the submission of a document that contains the answers as evidence that the student completed the hunt. In some cases, online instructors require that the hunt be completed before the student is provided access to the course materials! E-mail D Jackson for a PowerPoint example of an online scavenger hunt.
Do you have a tip you'd like to share? If so, pass it along to us and we'll include it in an upcoming newsletter along with your name and organization. |
