March 2011

I pledge to be Ace helpful.

Helping you is the most important thing I have to do today.

Spring Selling Season

March officially kicks off the busiest time of the year for our retail departments. As the weather improves and daylight lasts longer, folks are wanting to get outside and work in their yard or do other projects. To help ensure that we are taking advantage of every sales opportunity, we are extending our hours of operation (see below) and holding events throughout the season (see below). We also need the help of all employees to maximize our sales opportunities. Please remember to: greet every customer every time, ask the Magic Question (What can we help you with today), never say no to a customer without talking to a manager first, be attentive to pages for phone calls and be attentive to radio calls.

Hours of Operation

On Monday, March 21st we will begin our extended operating hours. We will be open as follows:

Monday - Friday 7 am - 7 pm

Saturday 7 am - 6 pm

Sunday 11 am - 5 pm

Be sure to check the posted schedule at the store or online at www.hillsace.com. (Username: employee / Password: hsc1537)

Upcoming Events

During the Spring selling season, we try to increase foot traffic in the stores and create excitement by having several sales promotions. Below are the events scheduled for the next few weeks:

3/26 - 3/27 Scratch-n-win - will include pine straw promotion ($2.99/bale - currently on sale)

4/09 - 4/10 Pottery promotion - will also include mulch coupon promotion

4/23 - 4/24 Dig in the Dirt - top soil coupon promotion

Encourage customers to watch the local newspapers and their mailbox.  If they do not routinely receive our flyers and would like to receive one by email, we can add them to our email distribution list.

We will be sending out our normal circulars on all these events and will be putting a great deal of effort into each of these promotions.  It is extremely important that everyone looks at the circulars to familiarize yourself with the ad, talks up the promotion, and shows enthusiasm.  This is something we expect of all the staff.  The spring boost in business should give everyone reason for some extra motivation - these customers are the ones paying all of our wages - without them, we'd all be looking for a new job!  Keep this in mind each day as you interact with customers.

Safety

Right to Know

OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard, also know as the Right to Know Standard was written to protect employees exposed to chemical substances during the course of their work. This standard is based on a simple concept - that employees have both a need and a right to know the hazards and the identities of the chemicals they are exposed to when working. They also need to know what protective measures are available to prevent adverse effects from occurring. This information is communicated on a form called the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). The Standard requires employers to maintain and provide access to MSDS's received, or obtain MSDS's if requested by an employee.

At Hill's we maintain hard copies of MSDS's received in the offices of both stores. If you want to see a copy of a MSDS, notify your manager or Mike Duane. We can also get MSDS's through Acenet and through Infotrac (800) 535-5053. We are also required to make MSDS's available to customers upon request. These are obtained in the manner described above.

The Standard also requires that employees be trained on how to read a MSDS. We have access to this training through Ace Learning Place. Over the next few weeks, all employees will be required to take this course. Your manager will notify you of the time for your training.

Spring Safety

As we enter our busiest time of the year, we need help from all employees to ensure that we have a safe environment for employees and customers. Trip hazards are a big concern to us always, but especially now with increased traffic. Please help us by observing and removing any trip hazards that you see. Some common hazards that are easily corrected are: empty pallets, water hoses not rolled up after use, electrical cords in high traffic areas, bands and blocks on the ground in the lumberyard and product or totes in the aisles. If you see one of these hazards, go ahead and correct it or at least notify your manager who will see that it is done.
