Dear friends,
Below is an account of another one of our interns expereince this summer. I thionk you'll enjoy it!
Hato Mayor is a small province in the Dominican Republic, surrounded by sugar cane farms and poor Haitian villages. Hato Mayor was also Josh Jones' (Asbury University, class of 2014) home for several weeks as he participated in a GO InterNational internship this summer. GO's partner in the DR is Justin Crocker and his wife Jacqueline, who have been missionaries for 6 years. For the past year and a half Justin has worked on a Christian television program for children. This internship was ideal for Jones because it centered around his passions, filming and editing. Josh was also able to help out with the church's childrens ministry. Josh's daily duties included filming different activities and then editing those into the weekly children's TV shows. The TV show is called "Niņo's para Cristo," translated "Kids for Christ." The program airs once a week and Josh was responsible for filming and editing 5 segments a week. "I was extremely proud of the work he produced during his stay," Justin said.
Because of the interaction Josh had with the children while filming them, he was also able to interact with them and connect with them. One such time was after the kids had a pool party. "Some of the kids tried teaching me how to dance. It was pretty funny," Josh said.
Josh obviously learned many things from this internship, but ironically he actually re-learned something. Growing up with a father who is a missionary evangelist, Josh is a pro at communicating with people who don't speak English. However, it has been a while since he has had to do this, so he had to re-learn how to use his hands to communicate with people that didn't speak English.
One very important thing Josh learned was when to take showers. "Don't take showers in the morning. Wait until the afternoon or evening when the water has been warmed by the sun," Josh said.
There were many new experiences for both Josh and Justin, in fact, Josh was the very first intern to assist in the production of "Nino para Cristo," and he probably will not be the last. "From this experience and from my overall experience with GO, I have further seen the benefit of partnerships in ministry. Many people in ministry put up walls and try to defend their ministerial "turf", but it can be much more effective to combine the strengths, talents, and resources of multiple organizations and individuals," Justin said.
Josh's internship was filled with fun, adventure, and connections, but most importantly Josh was able to pursue the passions and use the talents that God gave him.
If you know a college student who is interested in doing an international internship, please contact the GO office atthe number listed below.
Thank you and God bless!
