Hands outstretched....... pleading for a Bible! Throngs of people gathered as our team prepared to say "goodbye" in Cambiri, Peru. "Please give me a Bible!" they cried.
The scene reminded me of Wal-Mart on the day after Thanksgiving. You and I know that multitudes descend on these shopping malls for the largest shopping day of the year. Probably not many come to get a discount on Bibles!
Cambiri is in the Red Zone and is notorious for growing coca and for the illegal drug trafficking that accompanies this fertile region. Government forces seek to restrain the drug distribution routes and many poor people make a living trying to satisfy the demand around the world. Last year in Peru officials confiscated nineteen tons of coca in just one operation!
My two trips to Cambiri rocked my world. It is an area ripe for a Gospel harvest. Many local church leaders are concerned that outside Christians do not know how they are suffering there.
GO InterNational is now partnering with local pastors to sponsor leadership training events and to bring in hundreds of Bibles to areas of Peru that has absolutely no access to scriptures.
Last year we hauled twelve hundred Bibles into this region. This year one hundred and fifty pastors received a Study Bible and they distributed three hundred Bibles in the region. It is hardly enough considering the great hunger for spiritual truth.
Desiderio Escalante is one our GO partners in the Red Zone. Twenty years ago he was a drug runner from this area. Since his conversion God has given him a burden to reach his people in the region.
Desiderio, Wilkinson Grandez, Ivan Paz (our partner from Honduras) and Dr. David Deaton conducted our second annual pastor's conference in September. They were greatly encouraged to see pastors sincerely seeking to follow God. The Lord gave a wonderful time of refreshing.
For $3.50 you can provide a Bible to a new believer in the Red Zone or another needy place in the world. Click here to give online.
Thank you for tuning in!
