I met Joel while helping to conduct a medical clinic in the Kibera slums of Nairobi, Kenya. Dr. David Stevens, the CEO of CMDA asked me to help with evangelism as the team of docs conducted their medical clinic. We saw nearly 3000 patients in eight days of clinic but Joel stands out in my memory.
He watched me intently as I shared the about the love of Jesus as he waited for his wife. When I asked if anyone wanted to receive Christ's forgiveness, he raised his hand and came forward. He asked if I would share this story of Jesus with his wife and daughter. I said of course. I prayed with him to receive Christ and we visited a little longer. He left a changed man, his countenance was different and there was hope in his eyes. Joel returned the next day and we led his wife and daughter to Christ as well.
After I returned to the states, I asked a local pastor to follow up with Joel. He did and reported back to me that Joel was an excellent tailor, but had no sewing machine to do his work. Through the generosity of supporters like you and GO's economic development program we were able to obtain a commercial quality sewing machine for Joel. As you can see in the picture, his business has grown and he now employs several people from the slum.
