SPEF a
nd MENCHIES--A Partnership thanks to Our Students!

Menchies, one of South Pasadena's newest and most popular businesses, is doing even more for our kids than providing awesome frozen yogurt.  They've pledged 1% of their monthly revenues to the South Pasadena Educational Foundation!Co-owner Lars Martin cites the biggest reason for choosing to give to SPEF:  among the job applicants were many SPHS students who really impressed him with how articulate, educated and well mannered they were.  During the interview process, several of the kids mentioned SPEF and how it has enriched programs at their schools.  The Menchies' Corporate Office encourages their franchises to give back to local communities, so Lars and his partners decided to donate 1% of their monthly revenues to SPEF and hire 5 SPHS students in the process.  Sweet!  So next time you're treating yourself or your kids to some frozen yogurt, remember you're also treating your schools.

An Important Note From Our Nurse

New California Requirement Regarding Pertussis (Whooping Cough) Vaccination

cough

Recently, the number of cases of Pertussis (whopping cough) in California and Los Angeles County has s ignificantly increased. Pertussis is a contagious respiratory disease that can be passed easily from person to person. It is very serious for infants and can cause them to cough so much that they cann ot breathe. Whooping cough can cause adults or teens to have severe coughing that can lead to broken ribs and hospitalization for pneumonia. The number of California cases in August 2010 was seven times greater than the same time in 2009, with several deaths. The Department of Public Health is now changing its recommendations for Pertussis vaccination for children and adults, and the Governor has just signed Assembly Bill 354 into law, with the following requirements:

For the 2011-2012 school year only, all students entering 7th through 12th grades will need proof of a Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, acellular Pertussis) booster shot before starting school. This requirement begins July 1, 2011 and can be met by having your child receive one dose of Tdap vaccine on or after his/her10th birthday.

Beginning July 2, 2012, and beyond, this requirement will apply only to 7th graders - all students entering the 7th grade will need proof of a Tdap booster shot after the age of 10 before starting the school.

The South Pasadena Unified School District is planning to hold at least one immunization clinic in the District Board Room later in the school year. We will inform you well in advance regarding the date of this clinic. However, we recommend that you see your family physician at your earliest convenience to be sure your child is protected this year against Pertussis.

The Health Department is now recommending that you, as an adult, receive a single dose of Tdap to replace a single dose of Td (the "regular" tetanus shot that you should be receiving every 10 years). if you received your last tetanus toxoid-containing vaccine 10 or more years ago. Please consult your medical provider for more information.

UPDATE FROM
South Pasadena Council PTA
PTA
Help Stop Bullying, U.S. Tells Educators
The Department of Education sent a letter to the nation's educators urging them to ensure that they are complying with their responsibilities to prevent harassment, as laid out in federal laws. The is the product of a yearlong review of the federal statutes and case law covering sexual, racial and other forms of harassment.

Urge Your Representatives to Pass the Child Nutrition Bill  National PTA needs your help to encourage the House of Representatives to vote on S. 3307, the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, when they return from the November elections.  Congressman Adam Schiff (29th District), 35 S. Raymond Avenue #205, Pasadena, CA 91105, Phone:  626-304-2727

PTA Finds Nothing to Celebrate in State Budget With this budget, Proposition 98, the minimum funding guarantee for education, is suspended, and schools will receive billions less than otherwise required under the law. And once again, the budget is balanced with little in the way of new revenues, relying instead on spending reductions, anticipated federal funds and accounting gimmicks. After $17 billion in cuts to education the past few years, overall K-12 education funding will remain fairly constant from last year's funding level.  Although this budget provides an increase in funding over the Governor's May Revised proposal of $1.7 billion, or approximately $275 per pupil, all of this money is deferred into the 2011-2012 school year.

Yard Sale a Success
On a side note, big thanks goes out to all of the parents and students who helped us earn more than 6K at our recent yard sale.  The money from this sale will help fund our educational forums including a Special Needs Conference early year.  Thank you, thank you, thank you!

A Message From Our Principal

It is November.  Those leaves that aren't remaining a bright Southern California green are turning red and orange and falling to the ground on these surprisingly windy days.  The academic quarter has changed from first to second.  Students are walking the campus dressed as wizards-in-training from SPHS' alter-ego school, Hogwarts.  With Wednesday's Homecoming, we transition from fall sports to winter sports.  As we approach Thanksgiving, one thing that remains constant is our gratitude for our school and community.

We give thanks...

to Paul Groves, the SP Teacher of the Year, for his dedicated service to young people, the community, and his fellow professionals.  At the time of our last Tiger Paws update, Paul had been selected as one of the top Los Angeles County Teachers of the Year.  I am proud to share that Paul was one of approximately a dozen teachers, statewide, who earned a site visit and then one of only eight who earned an interview with the Deputy State Superintendent of Education in Sacramento!  While Paul was ultimately not named State Teacher of the Year, the accolades he did receive are amazing, and we are so pleased that he has been recognized as one of the premier educators in California.

to Ann Messana, Wish Night Chair, and all of you thoughtful contributors who made our teachers' wishes for instructional materials come true!

to the SP Chinese American Club for generously approving our grant for five document cameras for teachers to use in their instruction.

for the smooth transition to our new Late Start schedule that has students arriving at 9:15 instead of 9:20 on Late Start days.

to Mr. Leif Andersen, our new Physics teacher, for stepping in after the beginning of the year to fill our two-period vacancy.  Mr. Andersen is a veteran teacher who also teaches at Cal State L.A.

for the early decision to reinstate furlough days so we have our full number of school days, and for our ability to notify the community already about the change in our graduation schedule from Wednesday, June 15, to Friday, June 17.  Please see the updated calendar on our website (sphstigers.org).

for the parents, students, and staff who have dedicated many hours to a detailed examination of our practices, achievements, and growth areas for our WASC accreditation self-study.  Our Professional Development Day on November 12th is dedicated to more review and refinement of our self-study as we prepare for our WASC Visiting Committee's feedback in late February/early March.

to students such as senior Sean Wang who is a Regional Finalist in the 2010 Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology for his research predicting liver cancer.  Nominated by Science teacher Don Wielenga for a summer internship at City of Hope, Sean represented SPHS amazingly well!

to our varsity Small Business team that presented all aspects of running a business, from top to bottom, to special education students at the California Endowment Center, earning the raves of adults in attendance and the love and appreciation of the budding business students in their audience.

to our varsity football team for bringing the perpetual plaque and Crowley Cup back to SP by beating San Marino, and to our fans for showing that, win or lose, SP demonstrates great sportsmanship.  Look for Mr. Punaro's Tiger Paws article for more stellar news from the athletic front.

to our students/children for making us humble as we continue to navigate the pre-pubescent and teen years, this time from a different perspective!

There are so many people and things for which I am grateful, and I appreciate the opportunity to share a few of them.  Have a wonderful Thanksgiving, and please remember that, as always, I can be reached with your questions and comments at janderson@fc.spusd.net

A Message From the PTSA President

Dear SPHS Families,

This is the time of year that speeds past, with one holiday into the next, festivities, vacations, and time (hopefully) to reflect. While there is always plenty to complain about-state budget, bad economy, limited resources for public schools, rain on Color Day etc., there is so much for us at SPHS to be grateful for.  Here's my list of PTSA favorites so far:

  • Timely, compelling forums for parents-In September, our teachers and administrators presented Everything you want to know about SPHS, an extremely informative panel discussion and then in October, parents got to hear a newsy Update from our Counselors and then got logged on the library's computers and learned how to use Naviance college and career planning software! Next up and not to be missed: Spotlight on our Drama Department under the direction (pun intended) of Daniel Enright including scenes from students at different grade levels! We have Linda D'Oro to thank for putting together such interesting programs.
  • Lots of great things for your son's or daughter's classroom- 51 Wish Night Grants were awarded to the tune of more than $25K.  Thank you teachers for letting us know what you needed, families for answering the call and Ann Messana for taking this program from beginning to end and making it the success that it is.
  • So many volunteers-Who ever thinks volunteerism ends at the middle school level hasn't been to SPHS! We appreciate all of our volunteers. Work Bingo, donate food, sit on a panel for Senior Projects, volunteer your talents, give us your ideas!
  • Student Mini-Grants- With 80 student clubs-this is a no brainer! Laurie Astle is spearheading this successful program again this year and applications are almost due.  How could a club NOT need money? Let us help fund you!
  • PTA Reflections Art Contest-A chance to compete on a national level with any number of forms of creative expression including filmmaking, drawing, dance, etc.  Thanks Joyce Sloss for organizing this exciting competition. The submissions are in so stay tuned for the results!
  • PTSA Website is up, running and CURRENT and is on the home page (right sidebar).  Thanks to Monica Krieger for conceiving the design, Alan Shapiro for additional design work and for maintaining the site, and to Don Wielenga, the magician who made it appear on the SPHS website!  Please check back frequently for updates and do give us your feedback.

Please join us at our next meeting on Monday, November 29th with general meeting including principal report from 6:30pm-7:30pm followed by our forum: Spotlight on the Drama Department with student performances from 7:30pm to 8:00pm.

SPORTS MEDICINE

Taking ROP classes is one of the best ways for students to do career exploration while at SPHS!  Students who may be thinking about a possible career in any area of medicine benefit greatly from the Sports Medicine class taught by Ms. Tamar Berberian who is also the school's Athletic Trainer.  The class trains for jobs in sports therapy, physical therapy rehabilitation and the fitness industry. Students learn about human anatomy, biological sciences, and are trained in first aid, CPR, nutrition, exercise, physiology and injury care/ management.  This class clarifies for the student whether a medical career is a good possibility for him/her or not!  The class provides 'on-the-job training'  by having students work with the sports teams (after the students have learned enough in class to be helpful and productive). Last year two three-physician medical panels came to speak to the Sports Medicine classes about their career journeys, how they decided upon their specialties, minefields to avoid, and all sorts of interesting information about the medical field.  One orthopedic surgeon even invited some of the students to watch him perform surgery!   Sports Medicine is UC Approved for science-biological credit.  Students may take a second year for more in-depth training, and to play a more responsible, up-front role in the team conditioning/injury prevention/ rehabilitation.

News From the English Department

WRITING ASSESSMENTS UNDERWAY

The English Department has been hard at work creating writing benchmarks at every grade level.  At the end of the first quarter, most writing benchmarks have been administered or are in the process of being administered.  The benchmarks are in-class writing prompts which teachers grade and then use the results to tailor, modify and improve classroom instruction.  The English Department has been meeting to discuss how to improve the quality of writing across campus.

SENIORS HARD AT WORK ON  RESEARCH PROJECTS

Students in standard English 12 have already begun working on the senior research project.  This year-long project invites students to conduct research on a career of their interest.  Students research relevant information about the job including salary, hours, and benefits, write surveys and interview professionals in the chosen field, and finally, shadow a professional at work! At the end of this process, Seniors present their findings to a panel of community members. Want to serve on a panel? Please contact volunteer coordinator Sarah Kobara.

ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST ADDED TO 11th GRADE ENGLISH HONORS CURRICULUM

In an effort to update the English Department's Literature curriculum, and with the generous help of Wish Night funds, Ken Kesey's acclaimed novel from 1962 will be read by all students in 11th Grade English Honors.  This further refines the  English department's goal of aligning American Literature with the US History timeline that the students are learning about at the same time.

Spotlight on School Resource Officer Jason Lucas
Jason Lucas
School Resource Officer Jason Lucas has many lives.  By day he is a detective with the South Pasadena Police Force and SRO for SPUSD.  What exactly does that mean? Officer Lucas is the South Pasadena Police Department Liaison to all 5 schools and works to build relationships with our school leaders as well as our students, something he takes great pride in all to ensure school safety.  But come late afternoon and evening, this 6'7", 310 lbs gentle giant volunteers, often in uniform, as a SPHS football coach.  And he's not the only one wearing blue on the sidelines--SPPD Officer Juan Salcido also gives his time as a coach for the team. Here's what you might not know About Detective Lucas:

·       Officer Lucas played semi-pro foot ball on the Santa Clarita Maddogs and the California Predators.

·       His first love was baseball and he was once part of a travel league team. He played high school, Junior College and recruitment baseball for the Goodman Redbirds, affiliated with the Saint Louis Cardinals.

·       He's been on TV!  Lucas has appeared in everything from ABC Afterschool Specials to episodes of ER, Boston Public and The Parkers as well as a recent spec spot for Downy laundry detergent.

·       He is completing work to get his bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice so that he can pursue teaching.

Officer Lucas is from a law family which includes a brother who is an officer for the Compton Unified School Police Department, an uncle who is a retired LA County Sheriff's Homicide Sergeant (and South Pasadena resident!), a cousin who is a retired LAPD Sergeant and another cousin who is a retired LAPD Detective.

Class Notes!  Senior Report

The Senior Class Officers have been diligently working since September!  After the well-attended Ice Breaker Dance on October 1st, an event that earned $1,200 in profit, we immediately began work on our Color Day banner.  Because it is our senior year, we wanted to make sure that we won the "Best Banner."  Inspired by the movie UP, we were able to win and generate a tremendous amount of class spirit.  We wouldn't have been successful without the help of our SACC members (Senior Activities and Commencement Committee).  In addition, we just recently worked on decorations for Homecoming which took place last week.  The Senior Class attempted to go above and beyond due to the popular and exciting theme of Harry Potter.  Our decorations included building Platform 9 ¾, creating cut-outs of Harry and Hermione, making a Hogwarts Castle out of boxes and drawing an amazing backdrop with the infamous dark mark!  Over the next couple of months we will be focused on class bonding activities and fundraisers.  Despite a lot of class work, SATs, college applications, and many extracurricular activities, the Senior Class Officers are having an amazing time working hard to unite not only the class of 2011-but the school as a whole.

SP Chinese-American Club Awards Grant
classroom

The South Pasadena Chinese-American Club has awarded 5 document camera/projectors to be used in 3 Math classes, 1 Special Education Class and 1 English class.  "Thank you for another wonderful opportunity," stated SPHS Principal Janet Anderson.  "Nearly 1,000 students will benefit from the use of these cameras this year, alone."  The classrooms of Ms. Sandy Bishop, Ms. Kim Boone-Nakase, Ms. Gigi Leung, Ms. Ruth Moonesinghe, and Ms. Tiffany Owens will each sport brand new document cameras which have been proven to help students visualize what they are learning.  Perhaps you remember the days of overhead projectors; the document camera/projector is the 21st Century's answer to the old technology providing a dynamic and interactive tool for our students.  In addition to this recent award, SPCC  has granted money towards Virtual Business's trip to New York and renewal money for Naviance college and career searching software for a total of $3,000.
