Happy Father's Day
Since men tend to pay little or no attention to detail when it comes to family events or holidays, I am neither concerned that the headline above will capture the attention of my husband and fathers, nor worried that this note will ruin what we have planned for Father's Day.

But I'm kinda proud of what we've put together so in the event you have no clue what you're doing this Sunday, maybe this will help get things percolating.

*Tip: Men are simple. Keep it simple. Appeal to their inner caveman.

The men in my family like meat. And gadgets. Oh, and Homemade Vanilla Blue Bell Ice Cream on basically anything. I could serve it with shoe and they wouldn't bat an eye.

A few weeks ago I posted The Burger: A Family Favorite, inspired by the WSJ Weekend Journal article Summer Grill Recipes: Flavor-Bomb Burgers.

The only thing this WSJ article was missing was a beard.

I learned a lot from the article and it gave me a great idea for Father's Day because, once again, it appeals to the very caveman nature of men: meat and tools.

So, for Father's Day, this is what we've got. It's not fancy. It's not expensive. It's just a simple way for us to celebrate family and honor the men in our lives.

*In this post, the word "simple" does not refer man's intelligence.

Even though I'm on my 3rd kid, I'm embarrassed to admit that I've never taken a CPR class. But it's never too late! The Parenting Center at Children's Hospital will offer Infant & Child CPR (newborn-8 years) at both locations. Uptown: Thursday, June 16, August 18, 6 - 9 p.m. Metairie: Thursday, July 21, 6 - 9 p.m. Also, I've heard great things about their Growing Up Girls program geared to 9-12yos. To view all of their amazing programs and classes, download their Summer Program Brochure. They have a new Facebook page now, too!

The rest of the country calls them Snow Cones but what do they know? Celebrate this sweet summer delicacy at SOFAB's summer art Sno-ball Exhibit Opening Party this Saturday. Learn it's place in Southern history and sample a few flavors.

Step out of your comfort zone and take the kids to the theatre, where the magic of art and air conditioning converge. Patchwork Players performs Aladdin and the JPAS Summer Youth Musical Theatre group performs Seussical, Jr.

Don't let the pigeon drive the bus? Knuffle Bunny? Elephant and Piggie
? Sound familiar? Mo Williams, a 3x Caldecott Honor winner (and Newman grad!) will read and sign his newest book, Hooray for Amanda and Her Alligator! (see NYT review) along with Should I Share My Ice Cream on June 25 at the Garden District Book Shop. FYI: www.GoMo.net has a great Grown-Up's Page with fun activities.

Octavia Books has a series of book readings for kids of all ages: Children: Strega Nona's Gift, A Year Down Yonder; Middle Readers: The Tale of Despereaux, Scumble; and Young Adults: What Happened to Goodbye, SHINE.

Arts Market of New Orleans launches it's "Fun in the Sun" series June 25. Latin Fiesta is the theme. Kids can make Aztec masks while you nibble on fish tacos, Brazilian BBQ and quench your thirst with ice cold tropical drinks.

World Class Coaches to Lead Kids Soccer Camp & Community Service Project
It's not every day that young athletes can train with their sports heroes, let alone with internationally ranked coaches and athletes. This summer, some of them can. From July 25-28, five accomplished female athletes will lead a soccer camp for children ages 5 to 18 at Mel Ott Park in Gretna. Headliners include Charmaine Hooper once regarded as "quite simply the best ever female soccer player". July 29th the staff & campers will rebuild a home with the St. Bernard Project.
