Ralph Lauren: The "new black" of inspiration
| I've been very uninspired these days. I feel like Shrek, look like Fiona and have the mental real estate of a donkey. And no, this isn't some advertorial for Shrek the Musical, which, btw, begins its run @ the Mahalia at the end of this month.
But sometimes inspiration comes when you least expect it.
The internet was all-a-twitter over yesterday's coveted Oprah interview of fashion icon Ralph Lauren. Thank goodness someone DVR'd it because I am re-inspired.
In this rare TV interview, Ralph Lauren talks about his rise from humble beginnings, his passion for his work and love for his family.
As a father and husband, he is grounded. Family comes first. His love for his wife and their three children is HIS inspiration.
His work ethic and family values inspire me the most.
My work is my work and, yes, they were exposed to things other kids weren't, but they know what my wife and I value-we've always had the right value system about what's important in terms of family and people. That has nothing to do with being rich or poor. From a business perspective, his success is built on integrity, authenticity, confidence and a trust in himself that what he does matters.
When I taught at Kellogg Graduate School of Management, I'd tell the students that knowing who you are and using what you do as service to the world is how you become successful. I am no Ralph Lauren but my husband and I share these same values. It is very important to us that what we do in this world (and TO this world) matters and that we instill in our children a confidence and kindness that they can then carry into the world. Easier said then done, I know. But just like in business, sometimes you have to fail to succeed. Thank goodness kids are resilient. While the entire interview has not yet been released, you can read about it on Oprah.com or find someone who DVR'd it and have a little GTG. The interview is as aesthetically delightful as it is substantive. Oprah also interviewed Ralph Lauren back in 2002 for O, The Oprah Magazine. Should you find yourself ever feeling uninspired (either as a parent or a professional), here are some of my favorite Ralph Lauren quotes from that interview. How does YOUR life reflect the values that you wish to instill in your kids? |
| Sibshops NOLA: A Program for Sibs of Special Needs Kids | | Brothers and sisters will have the longest-lasting relationship with a sibling who has a disability-one that can easily exceed 65 years. During their lives, they will experience most of the unique concerns and joys their parents do. But few siblings of kids with special needs ever have a chance to talk about their issues with others who "get it" - until now. more>>
