A conversation. A connection. An invitation.
| | Trends in parenting. Local educational developments and initiatives that affect each and every one of us. Local and online resources and activities. Research in child development, parent psychology, health and safety. Tips, tools, ideas, inventions, innovations, inspirations. Absurdities. A living, breathing, local community. A conversation. A connection. An invitation.
These are the things that drive and inspire the nolaParent.
And these are the things that you'll find posted thoughout the week on the nolaParent Facebook page - everything from the relevant to the whimsical.
A community consists of a collection of perspectives, experiences and personal discoveries that deserve to be shared, acknowledged, celebrated and tolerated. These things make us smarter, stronger.
Rick Jervis, a reporter for USA TODAY, is based in New Orleans. He is new to the nolaParent community and welcomed his first daughter, Elle, in December. He is also one of my dearest (and smartest) friends. Since being thrown into the chaotic and confusing world of parenting, Rick has been burying himself in books. Needless to say, our dinner conversations have shifted from politics to parenting.
I invited Rick to do what he does best: put his thoughts and discoveries to paper and share them with the nolaParent community. His article Evolution, Playgroups and the Bilingual Child is an excellent read and was actually inspired by the recent nolaParent Facebook post Audubon Charter French School vs. the new French immersion charter, Lycée Français de la Nouvelle-Orléans.
Allen Kelly, founder and Lycée Français Board Member was also inspired and offers insight on the benefits of both schools. His thoughts are posted here.
Thank you to Rick and Allen for your willingness to share what you know and for contributing to relevant and important conversations that support our local nolaParent community.
If you have a conversation you'd like to start or contribute to, please consider posting your thoughts, articles, ideas and questions to the nolaParent Facebook community.

Evolution, Playgroups & the Bilingual Child
| | One of the most fascinating things I learned while preparing for the birth of my daughter last December was this:
Babies brains begin to acquire language at 7 months -- in utero.
The tiny embryonic brain at that stage starts spreading out neural connectors tasked with absorbing syntax and organizing sentence structures, even though the mouth won't utter a single word for some time to come. The connectors twitch, stretch and jerk in response to the sound of the parents' voices outside the womb. Equally fascinating is the fact that language is not a learned skill -- it's an evolutionary trait, a uniquely human instinct, like walking on two feet or opposable thumbs. Evidence of this can be found in the whimsical utterances of children -- "You giggled me!" -- that aren't taught to them by parents or learned through imitation. The brain comes hard-wired for language. continue reading>> |
