Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother
Unless you've been living under a rock (which, btw, is a perfectly acceptable place to be, so long as your visits are brief), you've probably read, heard, watched, laughed, debated and/or fumed over the recent WSJ.com article Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior.

The article discusses Amy Chua's book, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother - a personal reflection of one mother's approach to parenting...a VERY strict approach.

Since running the article, the WSJ.com reports more hits and comments in the history of any article published on the site.

Chua outlines the 3 biggest differences between Chinese and Western parental mindsets:
  1. Western parents are concerned about their children's psyches. Chinese parents aren't. They assume strength, not fragility, and as a result they behave very differently.
  2. Chinese parents believe that their kids owe them everything....Chinese children must spend their lives repaying their parents by obeying them and making them proud.
  3. Chinese parents believe that they know what is best for their children and therefore override all of their children's own desires and preferences.
The article incensed a lot of people and invoked a lot of discussion and judgement. But I appreciated the honesty, bluntness and guts it took for a mother to put herself out there for all to see and judge.

For those of you interested in reading more on this topic, here are a few additional articles and resources for you to peruse. And just for fun, I've included a hilarious interview by Stephen Colbert. more>>
The Democratic Family: Including Children in Decisions

Logo_NOPCWhile at times, you may feel like screaming, "I'm the parent, I'm the boss!", research shows that authoritative parenting is not effective.

Instead, including your children in family decisions, making them feel like they are in important part of the team, encourages them to cooperate because they feel like their voice is heard.

Children are naturally good, inherently curious and want to cooperate and experience a real sense of belonging in their families. When you understand and practice these principles, you will be amazed at the changes that will occur in your family. more>>
