Greetings!

BeliefsIt's that time of year when summer fades into fall, bringing with it the Jewish New Year.  For those of us in tune with this cycle, it's time to take stock of our lives, where we are and in what direction we've set our sails.  Taking stock of my own life, I realize that it's now a year since I've been working full time as a singer/songwriter.  So, please indulge me while I wax philosophical for a moment.

In the spirit of introspection, I recently compiled a list of what I've been up to this year and realized that - wow! - I've played over 30 shows in five states and two continents, released two CDs (Step Into Shabbat and Blueprint), taught six creativity workshops, and written more than a full-length CD's-worth of new songs!  I've been privileged and grateful to be invited into your living rooms, weddings, colleges, retreats, houses of worship, rooms of study, summer programs, and favorite venues.

I've learned this year, among many other things, that it can be surprisingly difficult and scary to pursue a dream.  I'm not talking about committing to working long hours and making things happen. I'm talking about the overwhelming feeling of vulnerability that you open yourself up to once you get off the sidelines.  What makes the vulnerability tolerable are those moments of feeling connected to the larger whole and being aligned with some greater purpose.  When I lose my sense of that, I lose my direction entirely.

Is it bad form to quote yourself?  Probably, but I've already written the most appropriate words I can find to express my gratitude to you for shepherding me through this first year.  One line in my new song, "I Don't Know" (see video below), goes as follows:  "I'd like to say thank you, good people, for your ears and your hearts and your gentleness, for without you right here, right now, I would not be singing this song."   Without you listening to me I would not be able to pursue this dream.  So, THANK YOU.

And, while I'm thanking amazing people, I want to point out the awesome new banner on this newsletter, thanks to designer extraordinaire, Elke Barter.  Please check out her incredible and fun portfolio!

And, finally, I'd love to see you at a show, class or workshop this fall.
HERE ARE SOME UPCOMING
HIGHLIGHTS:

1) Two very special introspective High Holiday concerts focusing on themes of Renewal and Redemption - one at Rodef Shalom on September 12 as part of the pre-selichot program.  I'll be playing two sets from 8:45 -11:00 PM followed by a musical selichot service led by cantors Marty Goldstein and Saul Rosenthal.  The second is on September 26 at 8:30 PM through Kabbalah Experience.  This second concert is appropriate for people of all faiths.  These are some of my favorite, most intimate concerts to play and I hope you'll join me.

2) I will be co-teaching an eight-week course with Dr. David Sanders ("Cultivating Your Inner Artist") at the Kabbalah Experience in Denver to help you get the creative juices flowing.  Here's the link

3) I will be playing shows around Boston and New York. More shows will be announced in the coming weeks.

I hope our paths will cross soon.

With love and gratitude,
Julie

PS: I want to send a very special shout out to everyone who hosted a house concert this year - you guys rock!  Arinn and Noah Makovsky, Abigail and Zach Shrier, Jacob Heitler, Rachel and Ben Lebwohl, Jennifer Kraft, Deb Dusansky, Aviva Pearlman and Nosson Knobloch, and the Barbara Goldburg and Friends Private Women's Spa. THANK YOU!

The Power of Not Knowing
Here's a sneak peek at a brand new song that I've only performed a handful of times, including tonight when I opened for the incredible Kimberly Dahme of the band Boston.  It's called "I Don't Know" and it's about reaching a point of humility when you throw up your hands and just say, "I have no idea!"  There's something powerful and humbling in admitting our smallness, that in some mysterious way enables compassion to enter out hearts.  Lyrics can be found here.
